The Young Victoria, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart were the winners at the 2010 Costume Designers Guild Awards held Thursday night at a ceremony hosted by Parker Posey at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Sandy Powell won for The Young Victoria in the period film category, repeating her BAFTA feat this past weekend, and also accepted the Lacoste Career Achievement in Film Award. Powell is now the clear favorite to win the 2010 Oscar for Best Costume Design. The Young Victoria star Emily Blunt, for her part, was handed [...]

George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis arrive at the 2010 Golden Globes ceremony. Clooney, up for Up in the Air, lost the best actor (drama) award to Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, but at least he and Canalis didn’t get drenched as they made their way into the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Clooney remains one of the favorites for the 2010 best actor Oscar, though Jeff Bridges will be stiff competition. Bridges has been nominated for four Academy Awards, but he’s never won. Clooney won a best supporting actor Oscar in 2005 for Syriana, a political drama in which he gets his fingers smashed.
Emily Blunt was in the running for best actress (drama) [...]

Best Actress – Drama
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Who would have thought a mere six weeks ago? I don’t believe many were expecting The Blind Side to earn even one quarter of what it has so far ($220m at the domestic box office and counting) or that Sandra Bullock would be named the top moneymaking star of 2009, the first woman on that spot since Julia Roberts back in 1999.
Critics weren’t crazy about The Blind Side, but the public is. And for the most part even critics aren’t screaming bloody murder over the fact that Bullock has been nominated for a best actress SAG Award and will be probably up for an Oscar when nominations are announced on Feb. 2. After [...]

George Clooney in Up in the Air

Nomi Morris on Up in the Air in GlobalPost, via The Huffington Post:
"This year, the film that has generated the greatest buzz is Up in the Air, the latest by [Jason] Reitman, director of the hits Juno and Thank You for Smoking, and son of Hollywood director Ivan Reitman (Ghost Busters). Up in the Air stars [George] Clooney as a "termination engineer," who has no home life outside of his job, jetting around the country helping American companies fire people. Both funny and sad, the film examines a society where frequent flier points become a substitute for family attachments. Reitman used documentary footage of 25 real people who had lost their jobs in Detroit [...]

Fast & Furious easily outraced its competition at the North American box office this weekend with a stunning $72.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in the lead roles proved to be quite lucrative, as the fourth installment in the popular series delivered a better opening weekend than any of its three predecessors.

Also doing pretty well was DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens, which took home another $33.5 million for a domestic total of $105.7 million after only two weeks in release.

At No. 3, The Haunting in Connecticut pulled in $9.5 million, reaching a total gross of $37.2 million. [...]
