The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ Academy Foundation has awarded a total of $450,000 to 24 U.S. film festivals for the 2010 calendar year. Recipients range from Outfest: The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and the Ann Arbor Film Festival to the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival and the True/False Film Fest.

CineKink NYC Calls for Entries

Film Riot

Hosted by Ryan Connolly, the weekly series Film Riot is being launched today at the Internet TV network Revision3.
Film Riot follows a team of independent filmmakers from scriptwriting to the premiere of their latest film. All the while, they provide how-to tips "for making high quality films with little to no budget."
According to its press release, Film Riot will also feature film industry experts discussing the practical implementation of the special-effect techniques introduced in the show.

Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting 2009 Deadline

The deadline for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 24th annual Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition is May 1, 2009.  Entries must be postmarked by May 1 or submitted online by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on May 1.

Babelgum Online Film Festival 2009 Competition

Babelgum, the independent web TV service, has announced the 40 finalists for the 2nd edition of the Babelgum Online Film Festival. The festival rewards international independent short filmmaking by providing international exposure and cash awards for upcoming talent.
Spike Lee is returning as the Honorary Chairman of the Festival Jury. He will announce the award winners on April 27, 2009, at a private event during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

Student Academy Awards 2009 Competition

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that a record 559 entries, from students representing 103 U.S. colleges and universities, will be vying for the 2009 Student Academy Awards. Additionally, a record 57 entries from 39 countries have been submitted in the Honorary Foreign Film award category, including first-ever entries from Egypt and Estonia. Trophies and prize money will be presented to the winners on Saturday, June 13, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

John August: Behind the Scenes Filmmaker Series

Nominated for BAFTA’s and Grammy’s alike, screenwriter John August has been garnering attention for the past decade.  He first received kudos for his multi-perspective indie film, Go, directed in 1998 by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).  A frequent collaborator with director Tim Burton, August has provided the screenplays for Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride.  In 2007, he directed his first feature-length film, The Nines, based on his own script.  August’s next projects include Dark Shadows, a stop-motion adaptation of Burton’s short film, Frankenweenie, and an adaptation of graphic novel Preacher with Sam Mendes attached to direct.  A frequent advisor to the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, August also runs a web site aimed at budding screenwriters.

International Outreach Initiative: Annette Bening, Alfre Woodard, James Longley in Iran

Eight members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are currently in Tehran for several days of educational and cultural exchanges with Iranian filmmakers, students and others from Iran’s artistic community.

Fusion 2009: The Sixth Annual Los Angeles LGBT People of Color Film Festival will be presented by Outfest and HBO on March 6-8, 2009. South East European Film Festival – Los Angeles Calls for Entries

The annual South East European (SEE) Film Festival – Los Angeles is currently accepting submissions for its 2009 edition, which runs April 30-May 5, 2009. The film submission form can be downloaded at the festival’s website.
Among the submission rules are:

1. The festival accepts feature, documentary, short and animated films from and about South East Europe.
