WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Tops Box Office

Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are easily defeated its competition at the North American box office this weekend with a solid $32.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The big-screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved book scored a strong average of $8,693 per theater at 3,735 locations. Starring Max Records, the film follows a lonely boy who bonds with a bunch of wild creatures in his imagination.

New entry Law Abiding Citizen debuted in second place with $21.2 million, with an average of $7,353 million at 2,890 locations. The F. Gary Gray-directed thriller stars Gerard Butler as a desperate widower threatening to bring down the justice system. [...]

Written by Kurt Wimmer and directed by F. Gary Gray, Law Abiding Citizen stars Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx as two men on the opposite sides of law. It’s just unclear who’s actually on the right side: the district attorney (Foxx) who agreed on a plea bargain that set murderers loose, or the man (Butler) who wants to take revenge against the D.A. for allowing his family’s killers to roam free.
Also in the cast: Colm Meaney, Bruce McGill, Leslie Ibb, Michael Irby.

THE FINAL DESTINATION Remains #1 at Box Office

The Final Destination held on to the No. 1 spot at the North American box office for a second consecutive weekend with $12.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
New Line Cinema’s David R. Ellis-directed horror sequel scored an average of $3,984 per theater at 3,121 locations, bringing its domestic total to $47.5 million after a little more than one week in release.

At No. 2, new entry All About Steve brought in a disappointing $11.2 million from ticket sales at 2,251 locations. Starring Sandra Bullock, the comedy follows a hyperactive crossword-puzzle constructor who stops at nothing to be close to the love of her life (Bradley Cooper).

FUNNY PEOPLE Tops Box Office

Judd Apatow’s latest comedy, Funny People, jumped to the top of the North American box office this weekend with $23.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The R-rated film, which received mixed reviews, scored an average of $7,793 per theater at 3,008 locations. Starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann, Funny People follows the adventures of a stand-up comedian having a near-death experience.

Aliens in the Attic, this weekend’s second wide release, only made it to No. 5, with a three-day gross of $7.8 million despite a run at 3,106 locations. The film chronicles a family’s battle against alien intruders in their vacation home.

G-FORCE Beats HARRY POTTER at the Box Office

Walt Disney’s 3D-animated flick G-Force topped the North American box office with $32.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Jerry-Bruckheimer-produced film follows a squad of smart guinea pigs trying to stop a ruthless villain from taking over the world. The film grabbed an average of $8,697 per theater at 3,697 locations.

Last week’s winner, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, starring Daniel Radcliffe, collected another $30 million in second place, reaching a total gross of $221.8 million after an excellent ten-day run.

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS Tops Box Office

National Treasure: Book of Secrets topped the North American box office this past three-day weekend with an estimated US$45.5 million.
The Jon Turteltaub-directed sequel to the 2004 smash hit National Treasure opened at 3,832 theatres on Friday, beating the opening weekend gross of its predecessor by $10 million. Starring Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris and Helen Mirren, the film follows the adventures of treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates, who travels the world to uncover the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
