2009 Golden Globe Winners

Kate Winslet, Leonardio DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road (top); Winslet, David Kross in The Reader (bottom)

There were few surprises among the 2009 Golden Globe winners.
The biggest one was Kate Winslet’s best actress, drama, win for Revolutionary Road. Pundits everywhere — including those in this blog — were predicting either Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep.
Sally Hawkins‘ best actress, comedy or musical, win may have caught some by surprise — those who were expecting Meryl Streep for the box-office hit Mamma Mia!. But considering that Hawkins has been a critical favorite (New York, Los Angeles, National Society of Film Critics) and that she’s a likely Oscar contender, Golden Globe prognosticators shouldn’t have been too shocked, even though Happy-Go-Lucky is hardly what one would [...]

Anne Hathaway May Not Win the Best Actress (Drama) Golden Globe

Anne Hathaway may not win the best actress, drama, Golden Globe for her performance in Rachel Getting Married, after all.
A technical snafu is the reason for Hathaway’s name having a winner’s star next to it on the Golden Globes’ site last Thursday, on the very day she was sharing a Critics’ Choice Award with Meryl Streep (for Doubt).
Later on, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association issued the following statement:
"In the process of preparing for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, a technician working on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s website made a mistake and a name of a nominee was randomly marked as a winner. The mistake was immediately corrected.
"The ballots are tabulated by the accounting firm of [...]

2009 Golden Globe Nominations

Golden Globe record holder Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! (top) and in Doubt (bottom)

The biggest surprise in the 2008 Golden Globe nominations’ list is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn’t dig a spot for Nicole Kidman in Australia (which was totally shut out), especially considering that Kidman’s former husband Tom Cruise did garner a best supporting actor nod for Tropic Thunder. (Cruise’s nomination, by the way, elicited laughter from journalists present at the Golden Globes announcement ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Laughter also greeted James Franco’s nomination — not for Milk, mind you, but as best actor in a comedy or musical for Pineapple Express.)
Among other Golden Globe oddities was the fact that Milk [...]
