Golden Globes 2010: Five Best Animated Feature Nominees

Up by Pete Docter

The 2010 Golden Globes will feature five Best Animated Feature contenders, as members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted last week to expand this year’s number of nominations for that category.
The amended rule for the Best Animated Feature category now reads: "Eligible films must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer) with no more than 25% live action. If less than eight animated films qualify, the award will not be given, in which case the films would be eligible for Best Picture. If less than twelve animated films qualify, the category will be limited to three nominations per year."
(The Golden Globes press release doesn’t indicate the number of animated-feature submissions this year, but [...]

Golden Globes 2010: Martin Scorsese to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award

Martin Scorsese will be the next recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Scorsese will be handed out his Cecil B. at the 2010 Golden Globes ceremony on January 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Hosted by Ricky Gervais, the show will be broadcast live coast to coast Sunday, January 17 on NBC (5 to 8 pm PT, 8 to 11 pm ET).
The Cecil B. DeMille Award, voted by the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was announced by Vera Farmiga.
Scorsese has already taken home two Golden Globe Awards for Best Director of a Motion Picture: for Gangs of New York (2002) and The Departed (2006). He has also [...]

Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Ricky Gervais, probably best known for his role as David Brent on the BBC version of The Office, will host the 2010 Golden Globe Awards ceremony on Sunday, January 17, 2010, on NBC.
This year’s show will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from 5-8 p.m. (PT) / 8-11 p.m. (ET) from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. This marks the first time the Golden Globes telecast has had a host since 1995.
"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV," Gervais is quoted as saying in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s press release, "but also an environment where [...]

Golden Globes 2010 Dates

Jorge Camara, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has announced the timetable for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards to be broadcast in HD Sunday, January 17, 2010, from 5-8 PM (PST) and 8-11 PM (EST) live on NBC from The Beverly Hilton Hotel.
This will mark the first time that the Golden Globes ceremony will be broadcast live all over the United States. In previous years, those on the West Coast watched the Globes on tape delay, after already knowing who’d won, what the stars were wearing, and whose speeches were the most long-winded.
Among the 2009 Golden Globe winners were Slumdog Millionaire (best picture – drama), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (best picture – comedy/musical), Waltz with Bashir (best [...]

Golden Globes’ Firsts and Mosts

Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada (top); Helen Mirren in The Queen (bottom)

Tom O’Neil in the Gold Derby:
"No, no, no, no — contrary to some wrongheaded sources over the past few days, Helen Mirren did not make Golden Globe history by becoming the first star to win kudos for acting on film and TV in the same year. Joan Plowright did so back in 1992, winning best supporting actress in [the] film Enchanted April and best supporting TV actress for Stalin.
"In addition to tying Rosalind Russell as the biggest winner of film awards by a woman (five), Meryl Streep tied another Globe record, too. Back in 2003, remember, she won a trophy for appearing on [...]

2007 Golden Globes: Nominations

Following the announcement of the 2007 Golden Globe nominations early yesterday morning, I watched three entertainment "journalists" discussing the choices of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) as if they meant significantly more than the outcome of good marketing tools.
In all fairness, the same can be said about nearly every other group, no matter how self-important, that gives out film awards. After all, their choices are usually the result of p.r. and marketing strategies, past or expected box-office revenues, and personal or professional politics.
That said, those types of biases — who, when, where is giving out awards to which films and individuals — are exactly what make those myriad film awards worth reporting. By looking at the choices, [...]

Argentina Brunetti

Actress Argentina Brunetti, a founding member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and a supporting player in Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), died in Rome on Dec. 20. She was 98.
Born in Buenos Aires, Brunetti came to Hollywood in 1937 to dub into Italian the voices of MGM stars Jeanette MacDonald and Norma Shearer. She began acting in films about a decade later.
In addition to Capra’s sugary fairy tale, Brunetti had roles in dozens of American productions, often uncredited, including Broken Arrow (1950), When in Rome (1952), The Caddy (1953), and The Brothers Rico (1957).
She also appeared in numerous television shows, among them The Untouchables, Kojak, and Everybody Loves Raymond.
Her last film, The 4th [...]

2005 Golden Globes: Nominations

Big-budget studio releases were mostly cast aside by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose Golden Globe nominations were announced today.
As to be expected, critics’ favorite Brokeback Mountain, about the mostly long-distance love affair between two men in the American West, ruled the pack with seven nominations. Since the Globes don’t cover any of the technical awards, Jake Gyllenhaal (above, with Heath Ledger) ended up being the only major talent in that film left without a nod.
The biggest surprise was probably the absence of Steven Spielberg’s Munich from the best picture – drama shortlist. Spielberg’s tale of terrorism and revenge, based on actual events, had been touted by those who had neither seen it nor read about it as [...]
