Oscar 2010: Very Few Surprises
This is a follow-up to my previous post on the Oscar 2010 surprises (or lack thereof). So, if you hear someone like Sandra Bullock or Jeff Bridges or Mo’Nique or even Stanley Tucci or Penelope Cruz telling the media, "Gee, whiz! By golly, this is all so totally unexpected." Feel free to call them shameless liars. Now, if someone like Joe Klotz says he was totally caught off guard when he found himself shortlisted for the 2010 Oscar, make sure to believe him.
Who’s Joe Klotz? See below a few more Oscar 2010 surprises in the less media-friendly categories.

Toni Servillo in Il Divo (MPI)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven semi-finalists in the Makeup category for the 2010 Academy Awards.
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

District 9
    Il Divo
    The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
    The Road
    Star Trek
    The Young Victoria

The biggest and best surprise was the inclusion of Il Divo among the seven. Paolo Sorrentino’s biting satire has been mostly ignored by US critics’ groups (the San Diego critics were an exception), so it’s good to see that it’s gotten some added [...]

Michelle Monaghan in Trucker

Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Is San Diego Critics’ Big Winner
Colin Firth’s best actor win for his gay college professor in Tom Ford’s A Single Man, however well-deserved, wasn’t really a surprise, but the San Diego critics‘ choice for best actress sure was: Michelle Monaghan for her portrayal of a carefree long-haul truck driver whose life suddenly undergoes a dramatic change in the concisely titled Trucker.
Among the critics’ other unusual choices were best supporting actress Samantha Morton for her war widow in Oren Moverman’s The Messenger; best editing to Alan Edward Bell for (500) Days of Summer, hardly one’s idea of "showy" film editing work; and the best cinematography award for [...]

Toni Servillo (center) as Italian prime-minister Giulio Andreotti in Paolo Sorrentino’s scathing political comedy-drama Il Divo. At the Nastri d’Argento awards ceremony, Sorrentino remarked that if he were to make Il Divo today, “and revolving around a woman, it’d certainly be about Veronica Lario.” Former actress Lario is right-wing prime-minister Silvio Berlusconi’s soon-to-be former wife, who recently filed for divorce while accusing her family-values proponent husband of being much too interested in some very young women.

Matteo Garrone’s organized crime drama Gomorrah (above, top photo), based on Roberto Saviano’s polemical book, took top honors at the 2009 David di Donatello awards. The Italian Film Academy voted Gomorrah the best Italian film of the year and Garrone the best director, in addition to handing the film five other awards, including best screenplay and best producer.
Paolo Sorrentino’s Il Divo (above, lower photo), which also deals (however indirectly) with the mafia, also received a total of seven statues (out of 16 nominations), including the best actor trophy for star Toni Servillo’s brilliant caricature of former Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti, and a best supporting actress win for Piera Degli Espositi.
Last year, Gomorrah won the Cannes [...]
