European Film Awards 2009: Isabelle Huppert to Receive European Achievement in World Cinema Award
Isabelle Huppert in La Cérémonie (top); Story of Women (middle); and 8 Women, with Catherine Deneuve
Isabelle Huppert, one of the greatest actresses of her generation, will be the next recipient of the European Film Academy’s European Achievement in World Cinema. She’s only the third woman to be so honored in this category’s 13-year history. (For the record: the other two were Victoria Abril and Liv Ullmann.)
The fifty-six-year-old Huppert began her career in the early 1970s, appearing in supporting roles in films such as Claude Sautet’s Cesar and Rosalie (1972) and Bertrand Blier’s Going Places (1974). By the end of the decade, she was playing leads in Claude Chabrol’s Violette Nozière (1978) and Jean-François Adam’s Retour à la bien-aimée (1979), and [...]

Isabelle Huppert, Isabelle Adjani, Mike Nichols Sign Another “Free Polanski” Petition
Actors Louis Garrel, Isabelle Adjani, Elsa Zylberstein, and Isabelle Huppert; filmmakers Danièle Thompson, Steven Soderbergh, Neil Jordan, Sam Mendes, Taylor Hackford, and Mike Nichols; formerly persecuted writer Salman Rushdie; author Milan Kundera; and stylist Diane von Furstenberg are among those who have signed another petition demanding freedom for 76-year-old filmmaker Roman Polanski, currently being held at a Swiss prison while awaiting word from local authorities whether he’ll be extradited to the United States on a charge of having sex with a minor in the late 1970s.
In his journal, La Règle du jeu, writer Bernard-Henri Lévy has asked for signatures supporting Polanski’s release. Lévy’s petition reads:
Apprehended like a common terrorist Saturday evening, September 26, as he came to receive [...]

Set in a small town in southern Morocco, Frédéric Dumont’s Angel at Sea is a coming-of-age tale about a 12-year-old whose life undergoes a radical change after his father tells him an old secret. In addition to winning the Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Crystal Globe for best film, Angel at Sea also earned its (adult) star, Olivier Gourmet, the best actor award (tied with Paul Giamatti for the soul-stealing comedy Cold Souls). Also in the Angel at Sea cast: Anne Consigny and Martin Nissen.

Best Films – 2002
A man is dead. Who among the greedy, ruthless, amoral singing-and-dancing suspects stuck in the snowbound countryside mansion has done it? 8 women is an acquired taste, bien sûr. What seems silly the first time around becomes increasingly wittier and funnier — though no less bizarre — with each repeated viewing. Beautifully shot by Jeanne Lapoirie and chock-full of bitingly sardonic lines and situations (adapted by director François Ozon and Marina de Van, from Robert Thomas’ play), this murder musical is dotted with 8 of the brightest stars of the French cinema of the last 7 (!) decades.
More than seventy years after her film début, Danielle Darrieux, in full form both as an actress and as a singer, joins [...]

I HEART HUCKABEES – Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin

Cast: Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Huppert, Jude Law, Lily Tomlin, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, Tippi Hedren, Talia Shire
SPANKING THE NIETZSCHE
Beginning with Spanking the Monkey (not a film about animal abuse), David O. Russell has made a reputation as a director of quirky comedies. I Heart Huckabees is no exception. Not that the comedy works — the film is as funny as a funeral mass — but simply because in this age of formulaic filmmaking, I was flabbergasted to be watching a Hollywood movie that is so abrasively unconventional both in form and content.
The storyline — if the film’s meandering thread [...]
