Jane Fonda: From 'Vietnam Traitor' to AFI Award and Screen Legend status (photo: Jason Bateman and Jane Fonda in 'This Is Where I Leave You') (See previous post: "Jane Fonda Movies: Anti-Establishment Heroine.") Melissa McCarthy Identity Thief overperforms; Steven Soderbergh Side Effects disappoints: Box office Starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, the Seth Gordon-directed comedy Identity Thief grossed an estimated $11.2 million at 3,141 theaters on Friday, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. That's considerably above expectations. For comparison's sake: Seth Gordon's Horrible Bosses, featuring an ensemble cast that included Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell, opened with $9.9 million on its first day out in July 2011. Paul Feig's Bridesmaids, another ensemble comedy featuring eventual Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph, debuted with $7.8 […]

jennifer-aniston-jason-bateman-the-switch-1

Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, The Switch Wednesday, Aug. 25, wasn't a great day at the North American box office. Attendance was down 21.5 percent in relation to Tuesday and a huge 45.3 percent in relation to the previous Wednesday, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Additionally, three movies fell below the $1m-per-day mark for the first time: Emma Thompson's Nanny McPhee Returns on Day 6, the Twilight Saga spoof Vampires Suck on Day 8, and Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D on Day 6. Leading the pack of box office wimps was Sylvester Stallone's increasingly tired The Expendables with $1.64 million — down 21 percent from Tuesday and a whopping 54.1 percent from the week before. The Expendables will in all probability fall below the $1m-per-day mark next week after one last weekend surge. At no. 2, the Julia Roberts-Javier Bardem-James Franco vehicle Eat Pray Love, which crossed the $50m […]
