At the North American box office, Crazy Heart (above), The Blind Side, and The Hurt Locker were the only three movies that benefited from their Oscar victories last Sunday.
Starring Jeff Bridges as a down-and-out country singer who strikes up a relationship with a younger woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Crazy Heart earned Bridges the Best Actor Oscar, in addition to another statuette for Best Original Song ("The Weary Kind" by T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham).
More than any other film, Crazy Heart has been immensely helped by the awards season buzz. Following Bridges’ win the film lost a mere 5.7 percent from the previous weekend — the smallest decrease among the top twelve films at the North American box office according [...]

"Thank you, Mom and Dad, for turning me on to such a groovy profession. Oh, my dad and my mom, they loved show biz so much. I remember my mom, getting all of us kids to entertain at her parties. You know, my dad sitting me on his bed and teaching me all of the basics of acting for a role in Sea Hunt.
"They loved show biz so much and I feel an extension of them. You know, this, this is honoring them as much as it is me. I wanna, I wanna thank Scott Cooper, our wonderful director, for his knowledge of film [...]

Lee Daniels‘ urban family drama Precious swept the 25th Spirit Awards held this evening at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.
Precious won a total of five awards out of five nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Gabourey Sidibe), Best Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique), and Best First Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). Upon receiving his Best Director trophy from The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner and two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster, Daniels referred to the odds-on Oscar favorite: “Kathryn Bigelow isn’t here tonight. I am.” Lucky him, though, ironically, Bigelow was not nominated last year, when her Iraq War drama was eligible for the Spirits. (There had been no Oscar buzz [...]

This year’s probable Best Actor Oscar winner, Jeff Bridges, who plays troubled country singer Bad Blake in Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart, graces the cover of the upcoming issue of Guitar Aficionado, in which the veteran actor is interviewed.
Referring to his career as an actor and his passion for music, Bridges says, "I dug what an actor did, but it took me a while to feel it, to truly appreciate the craft and the preparation. Plus, I was still playing music a lot, and I guess I had a hard time choosing: was I an actor or a musician, or could I be both?”
As for his Crazy Heart character, Bridges explains, "Bad Blake is one [...]

At easyodds.com you can bet on who will win the 2010 Oscar. Things look good for Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Kathryn Bigelow, Christoph Waltz (1-20), Mo’Nique, and The Hurt Locker. Meryl Streep and Avatar come in second place, not far behind the top choices in their respective categories.
At the other end, things don’t look all that good for Morgan Freeman (25-1), Jeremy Renner (28-1), Helen Mirren (80-1), Gabourey Sidibe (20-1), Quentin Tarantino (33-1), Jason Reitman (150-1), Lee Daniels (150-1), Matt Damon (40-1), Penelope Cruz (33-1), or Maggie Gyllenhaal (40-1). And the odds are totally against District 9 (150-1), An Education (150-1), and A Serious Man (200-1).

But in her home turf, Mulligan’s chances were anything but nil. An Education has been widely praised and [...]

Screen Gems’ romance drama Dear John dethroned James Cameron’s Avatar at the North American box office this weekend with a surprising $32.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

According to estimates provided by Box Office Mojo, Lasse Hallström’s romantic tearjerker Dear John, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, topped the domestic box-office this weekend, with $32.4 million in ticket sales. Avatar came at a distance second, with $23.6 million. James Cameron’s 3D sci-fier has grossed a total of $630 million after 52 days.
The $52 million John Travolta-Jonathan Rhys Meyers vehicle From Paris with Love earned a paltry $8.1 million ($2,983 per screen) on its opening weekend. Following in fourth place was Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness with $7 million, a 59.3 percent drop from [...]

Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried in Dear John

After seven weeks, Avatar’s reign at the box office may finally be over: an estimated $6.2 million on Friday vs. $13.8 million for the tearjerker Dear John on Day One, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Avatar had a small but not insignificant 16.7 percent drop from the previous Friday; even if the film rallies on Saturday — as it surely will — Avatar should end the weekend with at most $23-27 million. Outstanding for a movie on its eighth weekend — but it’ll land James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi adventure in second place nevertheless. Twelve years ago, Titanic remained on top for a total of 15 weekends.

All but two movies on the top-twelve domestic box-office chart posted losses on Wednesday, according to Box Office Mojo. Obviously, the effects of Tuesday’s minor Oscar bump didn’t linger very long.
Avatar had one of the smallest drops, 1.5 percent, down to $2.647 million for a total of $603.7 million after 48 days. James Cameron’s sci-fier was followed by Mel Gibson’s revenge thriller Edge of Darkness, which lost 19.9 percent from the previous day, with grosses of $1.1 million. At #3, the Josh Duhamel-Kristen Bell romantic comedy When in Rome, earned 706K, a 19 percent drop.

The Academy’s acting nods were nearly identical to those of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The best actress nominees are Meryl Streep (above), who earned her 16th mention for her portrayal of chef Julia Child in the comedy Julie & Julia; fourth-timer Helen Mirren as Leo Tolstoy’s wife in The Last Station; and Oscar newcomers Sandra Bullock as a conservative well-to-do mom who discovers compassion after adopting an inner-city teen, Gabourey Sidibe as an abused pregnant teen, and Carey Mulligan as a 1960s London student who falls for a man about twice her age.
Streep has two Oscars: supporting for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and lead for Sophie’s Choice (1982). Mirren won for The Queen four years [...]
