Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift: FROM HERE TO ETERNITY Screening

Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster make love in From Here to Eternity(top); Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra do a little (sorta) lovemaking of their own later on in the film (bottom)

Fred Zinnemann’s 1953 Academy Award-winning drama From Here to Eternity, starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra, will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The presentation will feature the premiere of a new digital restoration, as well as an onstage discussion with Ernest Borgnine, who has a supporting role in the film.

Sterling Hayden on TCM

Sterling Hayden’s "Summer Under the Stars" Day will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Now, Sterling Hayden is an interesting choice for the Turner Classic Movies series. Like previous TCM "Summer Under the Stars" honoree Gloria Grahame, Hayden — though tall, blond, and handsome — was never a major Hollywood personality or a top box-office attraction. And despite his presence in several important and still well-known films — The Asphalt Jungle, Johnny Guitar, Dr. Strangelove, The Godfather — he’s hardly a recognizable name today. And that’s why TCM’s decision to dedicate a day to him is so welcome. I mean, let’s take a break from Judy Garland…
Sterling Hayden Day will offer no less than five TCM premieres, of [...]

HOLLYWOOD DREAMS MADE REAL: IRVING THALBERG AND THE RISE OF M-G-M – Q&A with Mark Vieira

Author and photographer Mark A. Vieira (right), who’s been a friend for a number of years, has recently written no less than two books on Irving G. Thalberg, the young MGM mogul whose high-quality productions earned him both a reputation as Hollywood’s "Boy Wonder" and a special place in Oscar history as the name attached to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ Memorial Award given to “creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production.” Thalberg even inspired a F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, the unfinished The Last Tycoon.
Now, Mark’s two books may cover the same ground in terms of subject matter, but they’re radically different in terms of approach to same:
Hollywood [...]

Joseph Pevney

Director Joseph Pevney died this past May 18. He was 96.
Pevney was best known — among the few who’d heard of him — for his 1950s B-movies made at Universal, though beginning in the late 1950s he went on to direct countless episodes of TV series ranging from Bewitched and The Big Valley to Star Trek and The Incredible Hulk.
Among Pevney’s 1950s efforts are the Frank Sinatra drama Meet Danny Wilson (1951), made when Sinatra’s career was in the doldrums; Desert Legion (1953), starring Alan Ladd; It Happens Every Thursday (1952), Loretta Young’s last feature film; and 3 Ring Circus (1954), with Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Joanne Dru.
Also, the over-the-top melodrama Female on the Beach (photo, 1954), which [...]

THE WOMEN Remake in the Works

According to Variety, Clare Boothe Luce’s mordant comedy The Women may be headed for the big screen for the third time in 65 years. With New Line as the potential distributor, the new remake would be the feature-film début (as writer-director) of Diane English, best known as the creator and writer of the TV series Murphy Brown.
Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Sandra Bullock, and Ashley Judd are currently in negotiations to appear in the film, while Uma Thurman has been mentioned as a possible addition to the stellar cast. (Bening is supposed to take over the old Norma Shearer role, all sweetness and light — which would mean that Meg Ryan would be playing against type, as a scheming husband [...]
