James Cameron’s Avatar led the pack at the domestic box office on Monday, with $2.7m, as per Box Office Mojo.
Mel Gibson’s comeback vehicle Edge of Darkness came at a distant second, with $1.31m and a $430 per screen average. The revenge thriller opened with $17.1m, several million dollars below what some had been predicting. Directed by Martin Campbell, Edge of Darkness is Gibson’s first film since M. Night Shyamalan’s 2002 horror/sci-fi Signs.
The Josh Duhamel-Kristen Bell romantic comedy When in Rome, came in third place with $779K and $317 per screen. Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli was #4 with $744K, followed by the supernatural adventure Legion with $625K.

James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, got one step closer to beating the domestic gross of Titanic by collecting another $30 million at the North American box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Avatar easily beat its competition by scoring an average of $9,759 per theater at 3,074 locations. The film’s total gross now stands at an impressive $594.4 million. Worldwide, Fox’s hit movie has generated 2.039 billion since its release.

AVATAR Crosses $2 Billion Mark; Tops 7th Weekend

Avatar’s estimated weekend (Jan. 29-31) gross was at the higher end of expectations: $30 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That represents a relatively small 14.1 percent drop from last week. After 45 days in release, Avatar’s domestic total is $594.4m. If weekend estimates are correct, Avatar will pass James Cameron’s own Titanic at the domestic box office (not accounting for inflation or higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices) either Tuesday or Wednesday next week. The Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet romantic melodrama grossed $600.4 million back in 1998.

Gabourey Sidibe was one of the nominees for the best actress (drama) Golden Globe for her performance as an illiterate, sexually abused teenager in Lee Daniels‘ Precious. Sidibe lost to Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, but her co-star, Mo’Nique, took home the best supporting actress award. In Precious, Mo’Nique plays Sidibe’s resentful mother.
