Colin Firth, Julianne Moore in A Single Man, directed by Tom Ford

What’s a "gay movie"?
Brokeback Mountain? Midnight Cowboy? What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Milk? Top Gun? Lukas Licks Lodz?
Something directed by a gay man, say, The Philadelphia Story or Midnight or a couple of the biggest action blockbusters made in the last decade or so? Something written for the screen by a gay man, say, A Streetcar Named Desire or The Innocents? Something based on a book or play or short story or poem written by a gay man, say, Brief Encounter or In Cold Blood? Something starring a gay man, say, the 1925 Ben-Hur or Giant?
If you think about it, the label "gay movie" is pretty meaningless. [...]

Colin Firth, Matthew Goode in A Single Man

AFI FEST 2009’s Closing Night Gala presentation, the US premiere of Tom Ford’s A Single Man, will take place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday, November 5. (The festival, with screenings in Santa Monica, actually ends on Nov. 7.)
Based on a Christopher Isherwood novel, A Single Man chronicles a day — possibly the last one — in the life of a gay British college professor (Venice 2009 best actor Colin Firth) in the Los Angeles of the mid-’60s, as he seriously considers suicide following the unexpected death of his partner (Matthew Goode).
Written by Ford and David Scearce, A Single Man also features Julianne Moore (a likely best supporting actress [...]

Winner of the Queer Lion for best gay-themed film, A Single Man chronicles the emotional struggles of a suicidal middle-aged college professor mourning the sudden death of his partner of 16 years in a car accident. During that period — one day in 1962 in Los Angeles (a time when gay sex was still illegal in California) — the world is facing the Cuban missile crisis.
Loosely based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel, A Single Man was directed by fashion designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford, and adapted by Ford and David Scearce.

A man is dead. Who among the greedy, ruthless, amoral singing-and-dancing suspects stuck in the snowbound countryside mansion has done it? 8 women is an acquired taste, bien sûr. What seems silly the first time around becomes increasingly wittier and funnier — though no less bizarre — with each repeated viewing. Beautifully shot by Jeanne Lapoirie and chock-full of bitingly sardonic lines and situations (adapted by director François Ozon and Marina de Van, from Robert Thomas’ play), this murder musical is dotted with 8 of the brightest stars of the French cinema of the last 7 (!) decades.

The Hours (2002)
Direction: Stephen Daldry
Screenplay: David Hare, from Michael Cunningham’s novel
Cast: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Ed Harris, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Claire Danes, Jeff Daniels, Stephen Dillane, John C. Reilly, Miranda Richardson, Eileen Atkins
