According to Oscar savants, experts, and know-it-alls everywhere, one TV-ratings point was lost per unfunny repartee at the 2008 Oscarcast. If so, the one between Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway was both long and unfunny enough to lose the show about 2 million viewers.

Blame it on the dark-themed films, the (relatively speaking) little-known nominees (in the US), the — until just a week ago — threat that the show wouldn’t go on because of the Writers Guild strike, network TV’s recent strike-related viewership slump, the proliferation of film-award TV shows, the bad weather in Los Angeles, the Danish Film Critics’ Bodil Awards held on the same day, the evening’s fashion (Jennifer Garner, right), the iPhone, or the Oscarcast’s reputation for [...]

Richard Foreman / Miramax Films
Best Director: Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
By now the Coen brothers are veterans; they’ve been around for more than two decades and neither one has ever won a best director Oscar. Joel Coen was nominated in 1996 for Fargo, but lost to Anthony Minghella for The English Patient. (Until The Ladykillers in 2004, in which they were billed as directors, producers [along with a few other names], writers, and editors [as "Roderick Jaynes"], the Coen brothers shared credit for their films by naming Joel the director and Ethan the producer.)
It’s the Coens’ turn now — and they’ve won this year’s DGA Award, the first pair to do so since Robert Wise and [...]

Brad Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Oscar 2008 Nominations: Part I
Roger Deakins is competing against himself in the best cinematography category: for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and There Will Be Blood.
***
Jonny Greenwood’s much praised score for There Will Be Blood was deemed ineligible reportedly because "the majority of the music was not composed specifically for the film." Alan Menken’s score for Enchanted was also deemed ineligible because it was based on the "predominant use of songs" and not on actual scoring of dramatic/comedy scenes. There was no "best adapted/best song score" category this year — though apparently there should have been. (More at The Envelope.)

With an estimated US$41 million take, Cloverfield destroyed its competition at the North American box office this weekend.
Paramount’s monster movie directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J. J. Abrams soared past the $35 million record opening of the Star Wars 1997 rerelease. Cloverfield focuses on a small group of friends trying to escape Manhattan while a massive creature rips through the city.

New entry 27 Dresses (above, with James Marsden and Malin Akerman) ranked in second, pulling in $22.4 million from ticket sales at 3,057 locations. The Anne Fletcher-directed romantic comedy stars Katherine Heigl as a passionate bridesmaid who’s asked to arrange her sister’s wedding to the man (Edward Burns) she’s secretly in love with.

Last week’s winner, [...]

National Treasure: Book of Secrets topped the North American box office for the third straight weekend with an estimated US$20.2 million.
Walt Disney’s sequel to the 2004 hit National Treasure continued to slam the competition, lifting its domestic total to $171 million after a strong three-week run. The Jon Turteltaub-directed adventure tale starring Nicolas Cage (above, with Diane Kruger) as an ambitious treasure hunter is just $2 million away from surpassing the cumulative gross of its predecessor.

I Am Legend climbed back up to No.2, collecting $16.3 million from ticket sales at 3,648 locations. The post-apocalyptic thriller directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith reached a cumulative gross of $228.6 million after only four weeks in release.
