Sandra Bullock’s separation from reality show personality Jesse James, her husband of nearly five years, has become major news because the actress has just won a Best Actress Academy Award. Just yesterday, she canceled her appearance at the London premiere of The Blinde Side due to "unforeseen personal reasons."
“I leave you alone at the table and you come back with Morgan Freeman’s e-mail," Bullock told James during her SAG Awards acceptance speech. "I don’t know how you do it … I love you so much! And you’re so hot!" This was in late January. At the Oscars on March 7, Bullock thanked her mother, mothers in general, her "lover" Meryl Streep, and expressed her admiration for her fellow Best Actress [...]

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet in Sam Mendes‘ Revolutionary Road

Kate Winslet, 34, and husband Sam Mendes, 44, have separated after nearly seven years of marriage. According to the couple’s law firm, Schillings, the split was "entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement."
Winslet, who became an international star following her pairing with Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997, won a Best Actress Academy Award for her role as a former Nazi guard in Stephen Daldry’s controversial The Reader. She’s been nominated for five other Oscars: Sense and Sensibility (1995, supporting), Titanic (1997, lead), Iris (2001, supporting), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004, lead), and Little Children (2006, lead).
Among Winslet’s other screen credits are Heavenly Creatures (1994), [...]

AVATAR Box Office: #15 on Inflation-Adjusted Chart
Avatar has just beaten Titanic’s worldwide box-office record in inflation-adjusted US-dollar terms. As per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator, Titanic would have grossed $2.450 billion in 2010 US dollars, or about $16 million less than Avatar, a blockbuster that continues to break box-office records overseas on its 10th week.
Now, even if we choose to ignore the fact that the playing field isn’t the same — when Titanic came out, neither China nor Russia, two of Avatar’s biggest boosters, were the huge Hollywood markets they’ve become since; back in 1998, movies didn’t come out on DVD three or [...]

Robert Pattinson, with lightning speed, said as he took to the podium at the 2010 BAFTA awards ceremony: "Congratulations to Jenny? she’s a fantastic makeup artist." The "Jenny" in question is Jenny Shircore, who won a BAFTA for Best Makeup and Hair for her work on Jean-Marc Vallee’s The Young Victoria, in which Emily Blunt plays Queen Victoria. Carey Mulligan in An Education

Robert Pattinson, Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, Uma Thurman, Guy Pearce, Dustin Hoffman, Clive Owen, Matt Dillon, Noel Clarke, Terry Gilliam, Rupert Everett and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are some of the performers scheduled to present awards at the British Academy Awards ceremony tomorrow. In the US, the evening will be aired on BBC America at 8p.m. ET and 7:30p.m. PT — long after everyone already knows the identity of the BAFTA winners.
Hollywood movies dominate the BAFTAs this year — as in years past. Top nominated films include James Cameron’s Avatar, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, and Lee Daniels‘ Precious. Lone Scherfig’s An Education is the sole major British contender. [...]

Penelope Cruz in Broken Embraces (Emilio Pereda & Paola Ardizzoni / El Deseo / Sony Pictures Classics)

At The Wrap, Steve Pond offers some cool insights into the Oscar ballots. For instance, in all but one category, voters are supposed to write down the name of the film — not the talent — on the ballot. So, if your best director picks for the 2010 Academy Awards are Pedro Almodóvar for Broken Embraces, Kiyoshi Kurosawa for Tokyo Sonata, and Michael Haneke for The White Ribbon (one can always dream), you have to write down Broken Embraces, Tokyo Sonata, and The White Ribbon.
The one exception to this rule is the acting category, in which Acting Branch voters must write down the name [...]

Best actor European Film Award winner Tahar Rahim was present at the Dec. 12 ceremony in Bochum, Germany, to receive his trophy for his performance as a prison inmate at odds with the local Corsican mafia in Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet. However, much like last year’s best actress winner Helen Mirren (for The Queen), Kate Winslet was nowhere to be found in the auditorium.
Winslet won for Stephen Daldry’s The Reader, in which she plays a former Nazi guard who has an affair with a teenager (best actor nominee David Kross) half her age. That was in 2008. She won an Oscar and a Golden Globe back in early 2009. She was present at both ceremonies. But we’re now [...]

Penélope Cruz has already won a best actress European Film Award (for Volver in 2006) and since her role in Broken Embraces is borderline supporting, my guess is that Cannes winner Charlotte Gainsbourg (above, with Willem Dafoe) will be the one taking home the prize for her bereaved sexed-out mother in Lars von Trier’s Antichrist. But who knows? Oscar winner Kate Winslet (for The Reader) could be the dark horse who splits the vote with the brown one (Katie Jarvis for Fish Tank) so the rainbow-colored equine (French Academy’s Cesar winner Yolande Moreau in Séraphine) can win.

For the best actor award, I’d say the race is between two Cannes favorites: Tahar Rahim (above) for his [...]

Josh Brolin in Milk

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Josh Brolin (Milk)
 Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)
Though about as much a lead in The Dark Knight as Christian Bale, Heath Ledger is (almost) for sure the one who’ll win the best supporting actor Oscar come next February.
Philip Seymour Hoffman should get included for Doubt and Robert Downey Jr. for his politically incorrect actor in Tropic Thunder.
Of the extensive supporting cast in Milk, Josh Brolin is the most likely contender, while Dev Patel, who apparently supports himself in Slumdog Millionaire, should also make the cut thanks to his film’s popularity.
Runners-up: Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), as much a lead as Frank Langella, is being [...]

Richard Jenkins, Hiam Abbass in The Visitor

BEST ACTOR
Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino)
 Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
 Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)
 Sean Penn (Milk)
Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)

Clint Eastwood becomes a sentimental favorite whenever he has a Message to convey;

Runners-up: Unless Dev Patel pulls off a Keisha Castle-Hughes upset (she was pushed as a supporting player for Whale Rider in 2003, but landed a — truly surprising — best actress nod instead), the five [...]
