THE CRANES ARE FLYING, WILD ORANGES on TCM
A couple of recommendations for Turner Classic Movies viewers on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 20.
Wild Oranges (1924) is an early King Vidor effort featuring Virginia Valli, a popular leading lady of the 1920s. In this drama set on an island off the Florida coast, Valli plays a young woman whose quiet life with her grandfather is disturbed following the appearance of an evil escaped prisoner.
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, Mikhail Kalatozov’s The Cranes Are Flying (adapted by Viktor Rozov from his own play) is a beautifully photographed romantic drama about a young woman who goes through some rough times after her boyfriend, without having the chance to say goodbye, is sent to [...]

Jack Cardiff
Cinematographer and director Jack Cardiff, one of the early masters of color cinematography, has died. He was 94.
Cardiff’s work as a cinematographer was quite eclectic, ranging from his partnership with Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in the British-made Black Narcissus (1945) and The Red Shoes (1948) to prestigious international productions such as John Huston’s The African Queen (1951) and King Vidor’s War and Peace (1956), and to low-brow commercial fare such as Conan the Destroyer (1984) and Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).
I’ve never watched Conan or Rambo, but I have watched more than 20 of Cardiff’s 60 or so features, and I can testify that whether working in art-house or commercial fare, Cardiff’s cinematography was invariably one [...]

Kansas Silent Film Festival 2009
The 13th annual Kansas Silent Film Festival (KSFF) will be held on February 27 and 28, 2009, at the White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus in Topeka, Kansas. Sponsored by Washburn, admission is free.
This year’s KSFF highlight is the American premiere of the restored 1926 swashbuckler Bardelys the Magnificent, which until recently was thought to be a lost film. Based on a novel by Rafael Sabatini, and starring John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman, Bardelys the Magnificent is set in 17th-century France, where a local Don Juan steals female hearts but is unable to conquer the one woman he truly loves. Directed by King Vidor, Bardelys was a major hit for [...]
