Directed by Sam Mendes and adapted by Justin Haythes from Richard Yates‘ novel, Revolutionary Road stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet (Mendes’ wife) as a 1950s Connecticut couple whose "ideal" marriage is in the doldrums for they feel something is missing in both their personal and professional lives. The film itself has been included in several top-ten lists, and is up for a Golden Globe in the best film, [...]

Martin Scorsese’s 2004 Best Picture nominee The Aviator is the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ "Great To Be Nominated" series. The handsome but vapid Howard Hughes biopic will be screened on Monday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Following the screening, cast members Alec Baldwin, Jacob Davich, J.C. Mackenzie, and Amy Sloan, production sound mixer Petur Hliddal, special effects supervisor R. Bruce Steinheimer, and miniature effects supervisor Matthew Gratzner will take part in a discussion about the film.

Unless things change dramatically (and no, I’m not referring only to environmental chaos and apocalyptic wars), 30 or 40 years from now Martin Scorsese is going to be the best remembered name of the current top-five Oscar directors for actors. (The others being William Wyler, Elia Kazan, George Cukor, and Fred Zinnemann.)
In addition to having the most recent career — cultural amnesia is invariably a factor — Scorsese is the single director among the top five whose films can been categorized as belonging to a particular genre. Better yet, Scorsese’s forte is that much-revered tough-guy cinema.
And ain’t Scorsese’s men tough.
His first male muse, Robert De Niro, becomes a hero after slaughtering unsavory figures from the New York underworld in [...]

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced its list of 2007 nominees earlier today.
The only major surprise was the inclusion of Emilio Estevez’s Bobby — instead of Stephen Frears‘ The Queen (right) — in the "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" category, even though no individual performance from Bobby was singled out for SAG award consideration.
Also, critics’ favorites such as United 93, and both Clint Eastwood World War II films, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, were completely ignored by SAG voters.
Helen Mirren, on the other hand, was shortlisted in two individual categories as two different Queen Elizabeths — the current one in The Queen, and the one from the early modern era [...]

A man is dead. Who among the greedy, ruthless, amoral singing-and-dancing suspects stuck in the snowbound countryside mansion has done it? 8 women is an acquired taste, bien sûr. What seems silly the first time around becomes increasingly wittier and funnier — though no less bizarre — with each repeated viewing. Beautifully shot by Jeanne Lapoirie and chock-full of bitingly sardonic lines and situations (adapted by director François Ozon and Marina de Van, from Robert Thomas’ play), this murder musical is dotted with 8 of the brightest stars of the French cinema of the last 7 (!) decades.
More than seventy years after her film début, Danielle Darrieux, in full form both as an actress and as a singer, joins [...]

Those who think that gangs and urban violence are a modern phenomenon should take a look at Martin Scorsese’s ambitious Gangs of New York, a riveting tale of revenge, corruption, and power lust set in mid-1860s New York City. Scorsese had already covered the dangerous streets of his hometown in [...]

Tommy Lee Jones plays Howard Hughes (above, lower photo) in the TV movie The Amazing Howard Hughes (1977); Jason Robards plays the old and haggard Hughes in Melvin and Howard (1980), for which he received an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actor; George Peppard plays a fictionalized Hughes in The Carpetbaggers (1964); and Robert Ryan plays another Hughes clone in Caught (1949).

Initially, Michael Mann was going to direct The Aviator, but ended up co-producing it instead. Two of Mann’s recent biopics, The Insider (1999) and Ali (2001) were major box-office disappointments.

Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow were reportedly scheduled to play Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner, respectively. (Some reports have Paltrow as Hepburn, and Kidman as [...]

WHAT’S NOT GOOD FOR THE SPRUCE GOOSE. . .
Imagine Citizen Kane directed by Steven Spielberg. The final result would look something like a Barry Levinson film — for instance, the superficial and glitzy Bugsy. Or the superficial, glitzy, and bloated The Aviator. Except, of course, that Levinson is not the man responsible for the mega-production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric, billionaire ladies’ man Howard Hughes.
