The Associated Press‘ Jay Alabaster writes about the reaction of locals in Taiji, Japan, after the Oscar for Best Documentary went to Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove, an indictment of the dolphin-slaughtering practices of Taiji fishermen — they stab screaming dolphins after herding them in shallow waters near a hidden cove — and how Japanese authorities do nothing to stop them.
The Cove refers to Taiji and its dolphin-killing practices as "a little town with a really big secret," but local councilman Hisato Ryono says "everyone around here knows about it. The water nearby turns red during the hunt. The actual killing is done in a concealed area because it [...]

Best Documentary, The Cove

Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove, about the abuse and indiscriminate slaughter of dolphins at a secluded cove near Taiji, Japan, has been the most honored documentary of 2009. The Cove has won awards from various US critics groups, in addition to top awards from the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, the Writers Guild (for Mark Monroe), and the American Cinema Editors (for Geoffrey Richman). It’s the clear favorite to win the Best Documentary Feature Academy Award.
The Cove’s competitors are The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, Which Way Home, Burma VJ, and Food, Inc. None of them has much of a chance.

The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win the Directors Guild Award for narrative feature. The Iraq War drama can now be officially be considered the front runner in the Oscar race: last week, it won the Producers Guild Award as well. It has also won most film critics’ awards to date.
Bigelow’s fellow nominees were Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds, Lee Daniels for Precious, James Cameron (Bigelow’s former husband) for Avatar, and Jason Reitman for Up in the Air.
Among the other winners were Louie Psihoyos‘ for The Cove and Ross Katz for the television movie Taking Chance, which has earned Kevin Bacon best actor awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the Hollywood Foreign [...]

Following James Cameron’s best director upset at the Golden Globes, the Producers Guild of America one-upped the Hollywood Foreign Press Association by choosing not the blockbuster Avatar, but Kathryn Bigelow’s independently made Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker (above, top photo) as the best film (or best producers) of the year. Bigelow, screenwriter Mark Boal, Nicholas Chartier, and Greg Shapiro are the film’s credited producers. Expect Bigelow to win the Directors Guild Award next Saturday as well.
Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove (above, lower photo) and Pete Docter’s Up won in, respectively, the best documentary and best animated feature categories. The Cove, which exposes the slaughter of dolphins at a cove near the fishing town of Taiji, Japan, has already won [...]

Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove (above), about the annual slaughter of dolphins at a small Japanese village, has thus far been the various US critics groups’ favorite documentary. The runner-up is Sacha Gervasi’s Anvil! The Story of Anvil, which has been referred to as This Is Spinal Tap for real. (However, there have been accusations that Anvil! isn’t technically a "documentary" as its chronology is supposed to have been twisted around for dramatic effect.)
Of the seven documentaries listed below, only four have a chance of getting shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Awards: The Cove, Robert Kenner’s Food, Inc., James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo’s Every Little Step, and Agnès Varda’s The Beaches of Agnès. The others either were [...]

As I had predicted, Nine, The Lovely Bones, Avatar, and The Blind Side didn’t get much recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which announced their winners earlier today.
Talent from those films was probably mentioned during the voting, but only Avatar got listed in the final results: it was the runner-up (Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg) in the best production design category, after District 9 (Philip Ivey).
Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker was the Los Angeles critics’ big winner — best film, best director (no split, my prediction notwithstanding) — matching results earlier today from the Boston Society of Film Critics. Actually, the Boston critics gave the Iraq War drama about a team of [...]

Tahar Rahim in A Prophet

National Board of Review 2009: Top Winners
Other National Board of Review 2009 winners:
Jacques Audiard’s tough prison drama A Prophet, a likely Oscar candidate in the best foreign language film category, was named best foreign-language film. Michael Haneke’s widely acclaimed The White Ribbon and Sebastian Silva’s The Maid, which earned star Catalina Saavedra a breakthrough performer Gotham award, were both listed among the year’s top five non-English-language features.
Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove, about the abuse and slaughter of dolphins, was named best documentary, while Pete Docter’s box-office hit Up was the best animated feature.

The best actress winner was An Education’s Carey Mulligan (above), who’ll probably both win a bunch of critics’ prizes in the upcoming weeks and land [...]

Los Angeles Film Festival, Sunday, June 28, highlights:

Louie Psihoyos‘ documentary The Cove (Majestic Crest, 1 pm), the Audience Award winner at Sundance 2009, delves into the ruthless dolphin trade — yeah, those very sea mammals that make little children and their big parents smile gleefully and clap enthusiastically at places like Sea World and the like. What mom, dad, and kiddies are blissfully ignorant about is how those beautiful, intelligent creatures end up as unwilling participants in circus acts for ugly, imbecile humans.
