Among the eligible films and performers that failed to nab a mention were Giovanna Mezzogiorno for Vincere, Audrey Tautou for Coco Before Chanel, Maren Ade’s Everyone Else, Ulrich Tukur for The White Ribbon, Martina Gedeck for The Baader Meinhof Complex, and Michael Fassbender for Fish Tank.

2009 Golden Beetle Nominations

Jan Troell’s Everlasting Moments, a Golden Globe nominee and Sweden’s entry for the 2009 best foreign-language film Academy Award, received eight Golden Beetle nominations, including best film, director, actor, actress, and screenplay.
Set in the early 1900s, Everlasting Moments follows a young working-class woman (Finnish actress Maria Heiskanen) who wins a camera in a lottery, thus gaining a new outlook in life. The screenplay was written by Niklas Rådström from a story by Troell and his wife, Agneta Ulfsäter-Troell, whose grandmother was the inspiration for the film’s lead character.

Ten films have been selected as part of Modern Masters program highlighting the latest work of established directors at the forefront of contemporary international cinema.

Adam Resurrected (USA/Israel/Germany) – Paul Schrader’s brilliant new work tells the story of Adam Stein, who grapples with a paralytic case of survivor’s guilt in the aftermath of the Holocaust. An extraordinary performance by Jeff Goldblum captures the essence of the complex central character, a man who survived while those around him perished.
