Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT Tops Box Office

Sony Pictures’ Michael Jackson documentary This Is It prevailed at the North American box office this weekend, with $21.3 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Kenny Ortega-directed film opened at 3,481 locations Wednesday, bagging $11.1 million in two days. The domestic total of This Is It currently stands at a solid $32.5 million.
Most of the film’s footage was shot in June 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. It includes scenes drawn from hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage.

Concert promoter AEG Live (UK) has announced that full refunds will be available to fans who purchased tickets through authorized agents for any of Jackson’s 50 ‘This Is It’ concerts which were to take place at The O2 Arena in London. Ticket holders requiring information about receiving the refund should go to www.MichaeJacksonLive.com beginning Wednesday, July 1.

Michael Jackson, one of the two or three biggest pop-music icons of the second half of the 20th century, died of a heart attack at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles earlier today. Jackson was 50. Beginning July 12, he was scheduled to give a series of already sold-out London-area shows — 1 million tickets were gone within a matter of hours.
Despite his enormous success — 750 million albums sold worldwide; 13 Grammy awards — Jackson’s life a difficult one.
