Clint Eastwood’s Invictus was expected to land a Best Picture Oscar nod and was a possibility for Best Director. The sentimental political drama’s only two Oscar 2010 nominations were for best actor Morgan Freeman (above) and best supporting actor Matt Damon. "We didn’t get a best picture nomination? Well that’s a big letdown. Well there you go. That’s my problem, I thought we should get a best picture nomination," Freeman remarked upon learning that he was in, but his movie was out.
Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station was at one point touted as a possible Best Picture contender. It received two nominations: best actress for Helen Mirren and best supporting actor Christopher Plummer. As expected, James McAvoy was [...]

Oscar 2010 Predictions: The Winners
The 2010 Academy Award nominations will be announced in a few hours. So we’re wrapping up our list of predictions in every category we can think of, from best cinematography to best animated short.
Most of the choices below are based on which movies have received nominations from the various guilds and associations. Others — e.g., best song, the short subjects categories — are mostly just plain old guesswork. Some of those categories may end up with less than five nominees.
Also, several categories have their own [...]

Best Cast in a Motion Picture
The Hurt Locker — Christian Camargo, Brian Geraghty, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner
Many consider the Screen Actors Guild’s Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture Award as SAG’ best film equivalent. Generally speaking, that ain’t true. A "cast," or "ensemble," is exactly what the name implies: a group of performers interacting with one another in a movie. SAG Award voters, whether when selecting their nominees or winners, have almost invariably followed that "Outstanding Cast = Outstanding Group Acting" concept.
For instance, among past SAG Award nominees in the Outstanding Cast category have been How to Make an American Quilt, Marvin’s Room, Boogie Nights, The Green Mile, Chocolat, and Bobby — [...]

Mo’Nique (Golden Globe Awards / © HFPA)

Mo’Nique’s speech at the Golden Globes this past Sunday was the evening’s highlight for some. According to Brian Brooks at indieWIRE, the best supporting actress winner had already delivered a memorable speech the previous evening at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s awards dinner, held at the Century City Intercontinental Hotel. (About a stone’s throw from the Globes’ Beverly Hilton Hotel.)
Mo’Nique explained that she hadn’t been looking at the Precious rushes, and only realized the impact of her performance as Gabourey Sidibe’s abusive mother after she received a phone call from director Lee Daniels.
“Lee said to me, ‘Bitch!’ I mean, he said to me, ‘Biiiiiitch! You gave me far more then I could [...]

Jeff Bridges (Golden Globe Awards / © HFPA)

“You’re really screwing up my under-appreciated status here," said 40-year film veteran Jeff Bridges as he accepted his Golden Globe for best actor (drama) of the year. In Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart, Bridges plays an aging, troubled country singer who has a "healing" affair with a much younger journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal).
Although he’s been mentioned as a favorite for the Oscars — a sort of career achievement award for the four-time nominated actor — the Golden Globe was expected to go to George Clooney for his corporate-downsizing expert in Up in the Air. Penelope Cruz in Nine (David James / The Weinstein Co.)

Speeches at the 2010 Golden Globes ranged from the moving to the mundane. Mostly the mundane. The awards show itself wasn’t the most exciting thing on planet Earth, but at least it was over in about three hours.
What I was most curious about wasn’t who was going to win best actor (drama) or best director or best screenplay or best actress (comedy or musical). What I was most curious about was: Will someone throw a shoe at Mel Gibson when he shows up as a presenter? Will he be heckled? Will he get a standing ovation? Will he get shoes, heckles, and a standing ovation?
Much to my disappointment, [...]

Best Picture – Comedy or Musical
It’s Complicated
None of the five nominees in the best picture (comedy or musical) category has a matching best director nomination. Only one of them has a matching best screenplay nod, It’s Complicated. That shouldn’t be enough for this Nancy Meyers comedy to win, but this may well be the Year of the Woman at the Golden Globes. A romantic comedy directed by a woman wins, Kathryn Bigelow wins as best director, Dame Meryl Streep wins (again) for Julie & Julia, Top Box Office Star Sandra Bullock wins for The Blind Side, Big Bad Mama Mo’Nique wins as best supporting actress for Precious. Who cares about the men?

Sam Worthington in Avatar (WETA / 20th Century Fox)

The Academy is probably hoping that Oscar voters will follow the Producers Guild of America‘ lead, as their top-ten list features one mega-blockbuster, James Cameron’s Avatar (more than $1 billion worldwide), and no less than four blockbusters: J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek, Pete Docter’s Up, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Neill Blomkamp’s District 9. The rationale is that bigger movies are supposed to result in bigger TV ratings.
Cameron’s Titanic raked in solid viewership numbers back in 1998, but it’s been mostly downhill from there. Last year, the Oscar ceremony got an audience bump that was credited to the presence of teen heartthrobs Robert Pattinson (fresh off of Twilight) and Zac [...]

Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (Jonathan Olley / Summit Entertainment)

Thus far, The Hurt Locker is the top choice among American film critics. The Iraq War drama directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal, has won about a dozen awards from US-based critics’ groups, including those from the country’s three largest metropolitan areas: New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Although The Hurt Locker is surely going to get an Oscar nomination come next February, the film’s chances of actually winning the award remain iffy in spite of a SAG nomination (and likely win) for best ensemble. Either Jason Reitman’s dramatic comedy Up in the Air, in which George Clooney plays a corporate-downsizing expert, or James Cameron’s generally well-received [...]

James Cameron’s Avatar prevailed at the North American box office this weekend as the sci-fi action spectacle regained the No. 1 spot with another stunning $75 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Even though Avatar was dethroned Friday by new entry Sherlock Holmes, the film regained momentum Saturday and Sunday to emerge as the weekend’s winner. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar has brought its domestic total to a solid $212.2 million.

Guy Ritchie’s new take on Sherlock Holmes also delivered a strong performance at the box office, bagging a superb $65.3 million from ticket sales at 3,626 locations. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, the [...]

Probably because of both the enormous publicity surrounding its production costs and the nearly mythical place of Titanic in box-office history, Avatar’s box-office fate has been a major topic among film-related publications, whether online or elsewhere. So, here we go again.
According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic will come out on top this Christmas weekend despite having fallen behind Sherlock Holmes on Friday, Christmas Day. In her report, Finke says that as per her sources Avatar grossed anywhere between $28 and $32 million on Saturday. She adds that estimates for the film’s weekend take [...]

James Cameron’s Avatar: best long-toothed ensemble blue cast

The nominations for the 2010 SAG Awards will be announced tomorrow morning by Michelle Monaghan and Chris O’Donnell. As usual, expect some surprises.
In the past, SAG voters — only a relatively small group of SAG members vote on the nominations — have made unexpected choices such as Dev Patel for best supporting actor in Slumdog Millionaire, best actress nods for Ziyi Zhang in Memoirs of a Geisha and Patricia Clarkson in The Station Agent, and best ensemble nods for 3:10 to Yuma, Hairspray, and Hustle & Flow.
My SAG Award predictions are probably as accurate as the ones I made for the Golden Globes a while back. In [...]

Why should anyone give a damn about the (Golden) Satellite Awards?
Well, how often will you see a small, little-seen indie like The Stoning of Soraya M. (above) listed as one of the best films of the year? Or Hugh Dancy shortlisted for his performance in Adam? Or Mozhan Marno listed as best supporting actress, also for The Stoning of Soraya M.? Or the absence of two of the "top ten films of the year" from the list of the year’s twelve best films (six dramas, six comedies or musicals)?
The two absent (best) films, by the way, are (500) Days of Summer and Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino was also ignored when it came to the shortlisting the year’s best directors. Three [...]
