"Oscar’s Docs: An Evening with Sarah Kernochan" will kick off the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s 2007 “Monday Nights with Oscar” series, with screenings of Kernochan’s two Academy Award-winning documentaries, the feature Marjoe (above) and the short Thoth, on Monday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City.
Hosted by historian and journalist Perry L. van der Meer, the presentation will feature a post-screening chat with Sarah Kernochan.
Thoth spotlights Stephen Kaufman, aka Thoth, a performance artist in New York’s Central Park. The scantily dressed Thoth performs one-man operas, aka “prayformances,” with violin accompaniment, so as to try "to bring divine inspiration and healing to the world."

Training Day (2001)
Direction: Antoine Fuqua
Screenplay: David Ayer
Cast: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin, Macy Gray, Eva Mendes, Raymond J. Barry, Dr. Dre

Every few years, the Los Angeles Police Department gets embroiled in one scandal or other. The public is then told that the problem has been caused by a few bad apples; the system itself remains spotlessly clean. We get to taste quite a few of those bad apples in Training Day, a 2001 thriller that depicts a police culture embedded in corruption and violence. As such, the film could have become an early 21st-century Chinatown — a reflection of a city and a society so corrupt that nothing and no one are what they [...]

Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Direction and screenplay: David Lynch
Cast: Naomi Watts, Justin Theroux, Laura Elena Harring, Dan Hedaya, Ann Miller, Robert Forster, Lee Grant, Chad Everett, Billy Ray Cyrus

Mulholland Dr., David Lynch’s nightmarish take on Hollywood and on the pursuit of the "American Dream," is impossible to pigeonhole as belonging to a particular genre. The film is part black comedy, part mystery thriller, part psychological drama, part horror movie — it boasts one of the most horrific endings ever filmed. The final result is a long, bizarre — and brilliant — journey through an ambitious actress’ psyche; the most haunting such journey since the one undertaken in Sunset Blvd. more than half a century earlier.
Curiously, Mulholland Dr. was to have become a [...]

Monster’s Ball (2001)
Director: Marc Forster
Screenplay: Milo Addica and Will Rokos
Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, Peter Boyle, Sean Combs, Mos Def, Coronji Calhoun

In Monster’s Ball — the title refers to the macabre partying held the night before the execution of a death-row inmate — first-time screenwriters Milo Addica and Will Rokos join forces with third-time feature-film director Marc Forster to create a motion picture of powerful moments. Those range from the film’s dream-like introduction to an uncomfortable and surprisingly explicit sex scene. Other memorable sequences include the suicide of a young man in front of his stunned father, a graphic electric chair execution, and the sight of a bereaved widow watching her son die in [...]
