With special effects provided by Industrial Light & Magic, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest won in six categories at the 2007 Visual Effects Society awards ceremony held at the Kodak Grand Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland in Los Angeles. Massacred by critics, the adventure tale starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom was a big box-office hit nonetheless. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that seven films are "in consideration" for the 2007 visual effects Academy Award.
They are:
Casino Royale
Eragon
Night at the Museum
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns
X-Men: The Last Stand
Apparently, the visual effects found in Pan’s Labyrinth weren’t considered special enough.
On January 17, the Academy’s Visual Effects Award nominating committee will watch 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for the 2007 Oscar.

2007 Critics’ Choice Awards: Nominations
There were quite a few surprises among the nominees for the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s 2007 Critics’ Choice Awards.
Both Todd Field’s psychological sex drama Little Children (above, with Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson) and Clint Eastwood’s Japanese-language Letters from Iwo Jima were nominated in the best film category, but Eastwood’s highly praised Flags of Our Fathers was not.
Letters from Iwo Jima also showed up in the best foreign language film shortlist (a first at the Critics’ Choice Awards), along with Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, which has been both panned and praised (sometimes in the same review).
Leonardo DiCaprio received two best actor nods (another first), for Blood Diamond and The Departed, while Ben Affleck (above, with Diane Lane) was [...]
