2009 Pusan International Film Festival: Oct. 8-16, 2009
Set in Iraq’s Kurdish region following the US-led invasion, Shawkat Amin Korki’s Kick Off was inspired by a reportedly true story about a young refugee in Kirkuk’s main soccer stadium who began organizing soccer matches to help lift the spirits of the locals.

Heng Yang’s Betelut (China) and Chui Mui Tan’s Love Conquers All (Malaysia, see above photo) tied for the New Currents Award for Best New Asian Film at the 2006 Pusan Film Festival. Chui’s film also won the FIPRESCI (International Critics) Award.
