Sun Xun: The Dark Magician of New Chinese Animation

The REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles will give a rare U.S. presentation of Chinese artist and filmmaker Sun Xun’s animation works on Mon., Oct 19, at 8:30 p.m. Sun Xun will be present at the screening.
According to the REDCAT’s press release, "Sun Xun: The Dark Magician of New Chinese Animation" will feature "a program of shorts ranging from a witty experiment in body art (Lie of Magician, 2005) to the creation of an expansive imagistic world that evokes China’s checkered voyage toward technological and political modernity."

Surprisingly, the Association of German Film Critics did not pick Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s internationally acclaimed Das Leben der Anderen / The Lives of Others as the best German film of 2006. Instead, their choice was Hans-Christian Schmid’s Requiem, based on the real-life story of a woman who believed herself possessed by the devil. (That same story also inspired the undemonic The Exorcism of Emily Rose.) Henckel von Donnersmarck had to content himself with winning the best first film prize.

More on the Berlin International Film Festival:
Four German films will be screened in the Official Competition.
They are: Oscar Roehler’s literary adaptation Elementarteilchen / The Elementary Particles; Hans-Christian Schmid’s exorcism drama Requiem; Matthias Glasner’s Der Freie Wille / The Free Will, the story of a convicted rapist who is freed after 12 years behind bars; and Valeska Grisebach’s Sehnsucht / Desire (right), a love story set in eastern Germany, and starring Andreas Müller and Ilka Welz.
