Robert De Niro’s ‘Mushrooms’ and Other Palme d’Or Highlights: Cannes 2011

jane-fonda-catherine-deneuve-robert-de-niroMaïwenn, Mélanie Laurent, Kirsten Dunst, Edgar Ramirez, Marisa Paredes, Dede Gardner, Pablo Giorgelli, Bill Pohlad, Jean Dujardin, Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne, Nicole Garcia, Jane Fonda, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Nicolas Winding Refn, Robert De Niro, Maryna Vroda There were several worthwhile quotes at the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or ceremony held earlier today at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Perhaps most memorable among those was a bit found in Robert De Niro’s introductory speech, in French: the Official Competition Jury President thanked his jury champignons (mushrooms) — among them Johnnie To, Jude Law, Uma Thurman, and Olivier Assayas — meaning his compagnons (peers). Even funnier — and infinitely more charming — than De Niro was Caméra d’Or presenter Marisa Paredes, who hilariously tried to translate…

Overseas, Damon’s thriller has pulled in $32 million up to March 20. With $6.65 million, the UK is the film’s biggest international market to date, followed by Australia, Russia, and Spain. Martin Scorsese: Top Oscar Directors for Actors - 20 Nominations

departed-11Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, The Departed Unless things change dramatically (and no, I’m not referring only to environmental chaos and apocalyptic wars), 30 or 40 years from now Martin Scorsese is going to be the best-remembered name of the current top-five Oscar directors for actors. (The others being William Wyler, Elia Kazan, George Cukor, and Fred Zinnemann.) Better yet, Scorsese’s forte is that much-revered tough-guy cinema. And ain’t Scorsese’s men tough. His first male muse, Robert De Niro, becomes a hero after slaughtering unsavory figures from the New York…
