On the positive side, it was good to see Pedro Almodóvar (above, with Quentin Tarantino) introducing some of the Best Foreign Language Film nominees, the speech by art director Robert Stromberg — who survived some unspecified deadly illness — was quite moving, and it was interesting to see John Hughes‘ alumni in 2010 in an otherwise poorly presented tribute. (A tribute for the recently deceased Eric Rohmer at the Oscars would have been unthinkable; but Rohmer did get his due at the Césars.)
Anyhow, the presence of Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Matthew Broderick et al. was proof positive that, apart from Kathryn Bigelow and Robert Downey Jr, time doesn’t stop for anyone.

Julia Roberts (Golden Globe Awards / © HFPA)

Julia Roberts, who had been nominated as best actress (comedy or musical) for Duplicity, handed out the best picture (drama) award. James Cameron’s science-fiction adventure Avatar was the winner. Roberts will be next seen in Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day, which features an array of stars, including Taylor Lautner, Shirley MacLaine, Kathy Bates, Topher Grace, Jessica Biel, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Anne Hathaway, and Queen Latifah. The film opens in the US on Feb. 12.
Following that, Roberts co-stars with James Franco, Javier Bardem, and Billy Crudup in Ryan Murphy’s drama Eat, Pray, Love. In the film, Roberts plays a recently divorced woman who goes on a world tour. Richard Jenkins and Viola Davis are [...]

Much like Christoph Waltz’s, Mo’Nique’s best supporting actress Golden Globe win for playing Gabourey Sidibe’s mean mother in Precious was totally expected. Drew Barrymore, who won a Globe for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for Grey Gardens, said in her acceptance speech that Mo’Nique’s statements were both inspirational and a tough act to follow. Mo’Nique dedicated her award to sexual abuse victims, and was one of many who publicly expressed their love for their respective companions, husbands, wives, and other significant others.
Wearing a skullcap, Michael C. Hall was present to accept his award for best actor in a TV series (drama) for Dexter. Hall has undergone cancer treatment; according [...]

Inception, Iron Man 2, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (above, lower photo), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are some of Metacritics‘ choices for the 20 most anticipated movies of 2010.
Directed and written by Christopher Nolan, Inception is a sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio (who also stars in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Shutter Island, above top photo), Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, and Tom Berenger.
Iron Man 2 brings back Robert Downey Jr, hopefully in a well-oiled plot, while The Twilight Saga: Eclipse brings back Robert Pattinson, Orange Rising Star nominee Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner as, respectively, vampire, human, and buffed-up werewolf. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, for [...]

Best Actor (Comedy or Musical)
Robert Downey Jr, Sherlock Holmes

This is probably the most difficult motion-picture category to hazard a guess for the very simple fact that none of the five nominated actors have received much esteem and admiration, i.e., year-end awards, from US-based critics’ groups. None of the five is up for an individual SAG Award. On the other hand, only one of the five starred in a major box-office hit in 2009…
… And that’s why Robert Downey Jr is our choice to take home the 2010 Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a comedy or musical, even though Sherlock Holmes isn’t exactly either. Guy Ritchie’s reinterpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s hero opened just [...]

James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar earned another $6.9 million at the US/Canada box office on Wednesday, following a minor 5.7 percent drop from the day before, according to Box Office Mojo. To date, Avatar has earned $374.4m at the domestic box office. It’s now the #12 highest-grossing movie of all time. When Thursday figures are added in, Avatar will have overtaken The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($377m) and perhaps even Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith ($380.2m).
Internationally, Avatar is #2, with $1.131b. About two-thirds of the film’s box-office take has been generated overseas, partly thanks to the low value of the [...]

Probably because of both the enormous publicity surrounding its production costs and the nearly mythical place of Titanic in box-office history, Avatar’s box-office fate has been a major topic among film-related publications, whether online or elsewhere. So, here we go again.
According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic will come out on top this Christmas weekend despite having fallen behind Sherlock Holmes on Friday, Christmas Day. In her report, Finke says that as per her sources Avatar grossed anywhere between $28 and $32 million on Saturday. She adds that estimates for the film’s weekend take [...]

A flamboyant bisexual literary editor (Robert Downey Jr.) who can’t tell the difference between a ten-feet-tall transvestite and a woman. A pothead English professor (Michael Douglas) with so little sense of ethics that he has the gall to be upset when his wife leaves him, even though he has been having an affair with his boss’ wife.
