Best Supporting Actress

Penelope Cruz, Nine

Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air

Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air

Mo’Nique, Precious

Samantha Morton, The Messenger

With the exception of Samantha Morton, the actresses above were all included in the SAG Awards’ shortlist. Diane Kruger was also in there for Inglourious Basterds, but we think that two-time Oscar nominee Morton (Sweet and Lowndown and In America) has a better chance of landing a nomination for her role as a war widow in The Messenger. Why? Because it’s more dramatic, it’s not part of an ensemble, and Morton has been there before. Clearly, enough Academy members like her.
Also, we were tempted to replace Penelope Cruz with Marion Cotillard, but ultimately opted to leave Cruz as the [...]

Mo’Nique in Precious (Anne Marie Fox / Lionsgate)

Like Christoph Waltz in the best supporting actor category, Mo’Nique — who plays a nasty mother in Lee Daniels‘ Precious — is by far the North American critics’ top choice for best supporting actress of 2009: 17 wins and counting, in addition to awards at both the Sundance and Stockholm film festivals. Mo’Nique has also nabbed SAG, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and Spirit award nominations.
Anna Kendrick, as George Clooney’s assistant of sorts in Up in the Air, has come out on top in Toronto, Houston, and Austin, in addition to a National Board of Review win, while two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, playing a war widow in The Messenger, won in San [...]

Julianne Moore, A Single Man (with Colin Firth)

Will SAG Award voters like Precious and its individual cast members more than, say, US film critics and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Will they like Nine better? Will they like The Lovely Bones better? Will they like An Education better?
Depending on how much they like those movies, all four of which are actors’ showcases, some of the performers listed below may go from "strong possibilities" to nominees, or from "possibilities" to "strong possibilities," or from "less likely" to "possibilities." In other words, this year the best supporting actress category is [...]

Michelle Monaghan in Trucker

Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Is San Diego Critics’ Big Winner
Colin Firth’s best actor win for his gay college professor in Tom Ford’s A Single Man, however well-deserved, wasn’t really a surprise, but the San Diego critics‘ choice for best actress sure was: Michelle Monaghan for her portrayal of a carefree long-haul truck driver whose life suddenly undergoes a dramatic change in the concisely titled Trucker.
Among the critics’ other unusual choices were best supporting actress Samantha Morton for her war widow in Oren Moverman’s The Messenger; best editing to Alan Edward Bell for (500) Days of Summer, hardly one’s idea of "showy" film editing work; and the best cinematography award for [...]

In Oren Moverman’s The Messenger, Ben Foster stars as Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army officer recently returned home from Iraq. Once on American soil, Montgomery is assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service, where he is partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) to bring the bad news to the families of dead soldiers. Eventually, Will finds himself drawn to Olivia (Samantha Morton), to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband’s death.
The Messenger won the Silver Bear for best screenplay (Moverman and Alessandro Camon) and the Peace Award at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
The Messenger opens in the US on Nov. 13.
