BAFTA 2005: Nomination Issues

Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (above, with Eastwood and Hilary Swank), Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Un long dimanche de fiançailles / A Very Long Engagement, Bill Condon’s Kinsey, and Alexander Payne’s Sideways have been shortchanged by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts‘
new rules.
The aforementioned films were officially eligible for the 2004 BAFTA awards, but Sideways only managed to get one nomination for its screenplay, Un long dimanche de fiançailles received one nod in the best foreign-language film category, while Million Dollar Baby and Kinsey were completely ignored.
The problem is that several potential contenders for the BAFTA Awards have been just released in the United Kingdom, or they are yet to be released in that country.
Since the BAFTAs are [...]

2005 WGA Award Nominations

The biggest surprise in the 2005 Writers Guild Award nominations was the inclusion of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls (above, with Lindsay Lohan), which has thus far been ignored by other award-giving groups. Among the other nominated screenplays were those for multiple award-winners The Aviator, Sideways, and Million Dollar Baby.
According to the WGA’s press release, "films eligible for a Writers Guild Award were produced signatory to the Writers Guild minimum basic agreement, and released in the year 2004 under the jurisdiction of Writers Guild of America, East and West and affiliate guilds in Australia, Canada, French Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and New Zealand. There were 193 films eligible for nomination in the categories of Original Screenplay (109) and Adapted Screenplay (84)."

SIDEWAYS d: Alexander Payne

Sideways (2004)
Director: Alexander Payne
Screenplay: Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, from Rex Pickett’s novel
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh

DAYS OF WINE AND LOSERS
With Election, Alexander Payne demonstrated a flair for satirical comedy the likes of which would have turned Billy Wilder green with envy. With About Schmidt, Payne demonstrated that his comedic flair could go the way of Wilder’s in fluff like Sabrina — artificial, cutesy, and bland. In Sideways, Payne unfortunately opted for Schmidt’s route. I found his adaptation (with Jim Taylor) of Rex Pickett’s novel an overlong, superficial, and thoroughly unconvincing road movie about adult men — who should have been killed at birth — learning to grow up.
First of all, the film’s [...]
