Carey Mulligan in An Education

PRECIOUS Sweeps 25th Spirits Awards
The Spirit Award nominations are selected by several groups of film professionals, scholars, and critics, depending on the categories. That explains how something like Alvarez’s micro-budgeted Easier with Practice received two nominations, including Best First Film. Or how Cary Fukunaga’s Spanish-language Sin Nombre, one of the best-received films last year, was in the running for three Spirit Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Or how Maria Bello and Souléymane Sy Savané were nominated for, respectively, Downloading Nancy and Goodbye, Solo.
The Spirit Award winners, however, are voted on by anyone who’s a Film Independent or Independent Film Project member. That helps to explain why a popular hit with lots of Oscar buzz [...]

Sin Nombre, a Mexican-American co-production directed by Cary Fukunaga and featuring Stockholm Film Festival best actor winner Edgar Flores, has thus far been the US-critics’ favorite foreign-language film of 2009, with six wins. Additionally, Fukunaga’s drama about a Honduran family’s dramatic trek north to the United States, has landed Critics Choice and Spirit Award nominations.

Anna Kendrick, George Clooney in Up in the Air (Dale Robinette / Paramount)

Up in the Air was the top choice of the Florida Film Critics Circle 2009 awards. Jason Reitman’s comedy-drama about an expert corporate downsizer who travels the United States to fire people won a total of three awards; the other two were for Best Director Reitman and Best Actor George Clooney.
Lee Daniels’ Precious also won three awards: a surprising one for Best Actress Gabourey Sidibe, who’s usually been listed as a nominee or runner-up; an unsurprising one for Best Supporting Actress Mo’Nique, who has been winning awards left and right; and a more expected mention to Sidibe as the year’s breakthrough [...]

There are no surprises, major or otherwise, in the Houston Film Critics Society’s list of the best 2009 had to offer. Critics’ faves The Hurt Locker (above) and Up in the Air won three prizes each. The former for best film, best director (Kathryn Bigelow), and best cinematography (Barry Ackroyd); the latter for best actor (George Clooney), best supporting actress (Anna Kendrick), and best screenplay (Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner).
Other Houston winners matched those found in best-of-the-year lists compiled by other US-based critics’ groups, including Carey Mulligan as best actress for An Education, Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre as best foreign language film, Pete Docter’s Up as best animated feature, Louie Psihoyos’s The Cove as best documentary, and Christoph [...]

The Austin Film Critics Association has chosen the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker (above, with Jeremy Renner) as the best film of 2009. Kathryn Bigelow was chosen best director.
Most other Austin picks were just as predictable, though they didn’t exactly match the choices of the majority of critics groups thus far, e.g., Anna Kendrick as best supporting actress for Up in the Air (same as the National Board of Review), Colin Firth as best actor for A Single Man (also in San Francisco), and Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre as best foreign film.

The one major surprise was the choice of Mélanie Laurent (above) as best actress for Inglourious Basterds, in which she plays a French Jew running [...]
