James Cameron is ecstatic that Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker was the night’s big winner

First the good news: the Adam Shankman-Bill Mechanic-produced 2010 Oscar telecast drew 14% more viewers than last year, when Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture. Whether that was because of Avatar, the Super Bowl Ratings Effect, Sandra Bullock, The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson (who wasn’t there), Twitter, The New Tenants‘ Joachim Black, the Elinor Burkett-Roger Ross Williams to-do, the rotten economy, or the John Hughes & horror movie tributes, no one can tell.
Now the not-so-good news: Reviews for the Oscar show have been mostly negative. And even the ones that weren’t downright pans were at best unenthusiastic.

James Cameron’s Avatar grossed another $6 million on Thursday, an 11 percent drop from Wednesday, according to Box Office Mojo. The sci-fi epic’s total gross to date in the US/Canada is $380.5m. It’s now the tenth biggest blockbuster ever at the domestic box office (not taking inflation/higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices into account), slightly ahead of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Depending on how well it does over the weekend, by Monday Avatar could be somewhere between slots #4 and #8.
Written and directed by Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Laz Alonso, Giovanni Ribisi, CCH Pounder, and West Studi. It’s been nominated for both the Directors Guild and the Producers Guild [...]

The addresses on the envelopes are phony — Alec Baldwin doesn’t live at 30 Rock Pl and Steve Martin doesn’t live at King Tut Something-or-Other, but the 2010 Academy Award nomination ballots pictured above are for real. The ballots were mailed out on Dec. 28 to the 5,777 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
According to the Academy’s preferential voting system, every vote is supposed to count — unless, of course, none of your choices make it into the top ten (for best picture) or top five (in case you belong to an individual branch* as well). Having said that, I should add that at most only one vote per ballot will be [...]

Zoe Kazan, Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Hunter Parrish in It’s Complicated

Synopsis and film information from the It’s Complicated press release:
Jane Adler (two-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has — after a decade of divorce — an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Alec Baldwin). But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated.

An innocent meal together leads to several bottles of wine, which in turn becomes a laugh-filled evening of memories about their 19-year marriage… and then to an impulsive affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), [...]

Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Lake Bell in It’s Complicated

Written and directed by Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday), It’s Complicated is an upcoming romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep as a divorced mother of three kids who unexpectedly finds herself torn between an attorney ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and an architect paramour (Steve Martin).

Something’s Gotta Give earned Diane Keaton an Oscar nomination, but Meryl Streep’s all-but-inevitable Oscar nod will most likely come by way of her Julia Child in Julie & Julia. Co-stars Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, however, if properly pushed in the best supporting actor category, have a better chance of being mentioned come Oscar time.
Also in the It’s Complicated cast: John Krasinski, Rita [...]

Steve Martin in The Pink Panther 2

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will act as co-hosts at the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman have announced.
Steve Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter several times, most recently at the 2009 Oscar ceremony in February, when he shared the stage with Tina Fey. (Theirs was a very clever bit. Tina Fey, in fact, would have been an ideal Oscar co-hostess.)
Alec Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in The Cooler.
The 2010 Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February [...]
