Sasha Grey in THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE Photos
Set at the time of the 2008 US presidential elections, The Girlfriend Experience follows Manhattan escort Chelsea (21-year-old Sasha Grey, voted best female performer in XXX films last year), a savvy businesswoman who offers the "girlfriend experience" to her clients: dinner and movie dates, chats, sex — and even that most indecent of habits, kissing.
Sounds like fun? Perhaps it is, but then there’s both the boyfriend (Chris Santos) and a special writer (Philip Eytan) from Los Angeles.
Sounds decadent? Well, that’s nothing compared to the free fall of the global economy thanks to the (truly) obscene behavior of bankers and their politician-whores.
While the world financial markets crumble, Chelsea gets laid — and ponders about how to best invest [...]

Matt Damon in THE INFORMANT Photos
Directed by Steven Soderbergh (above, lower photo) and written by Scott Z. Burns (from Kurt Eichenwald’s book on the true story of executive-turned-whistleblower Mark Whitacre), The Informant! was recently screened out of the competition at the 2009 Venice Film Festival.
Matt Damon, who gained about 30 lbs. for the role (and who still looks nothing like Whitacre), stars as the high-ranking executive informant (and embezzler) who gets agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland in big trouble with the U.S. government.
Also in the Informant! cast: Lucas Carroll, Eddie Jemison, and Rusty Schwimmer.
The Informant! opens in the US on Sept. 18.

THE LIMEY d: Steven Soderbergh
The Limey (1999)
Direction: Steven Soderbergh
Screenplay: Lem Dobbs
Cast: Terence Stamp, Lesley Ann Warren, Luis Guzman, Peter Fonda, Barry Newman, Joe Dallesandro, Nicky Katt, Amelia Heinle, Melissa George
By Dan Schneider of Cosmoetica:
Director Steven Soderbergh’s 1999 so-called crime drama The Limey is easily the best Soderbergh effort I’ve seen. That’s partly due to the innovative narrative structure, which makes all but the last few minutes of this great film a flashback. The rest is due to an excellent script by Lem Dobbs, whose other great success came a year earlier, in Alex Proyas’ sci-fi thriller Dark City. Both films, despite their apparent differences, are acutely focused on human memory and [...]

THE LIMEY II – Terence Stamp
THE LIMEY – Part I
Aside from memory, there are superbly rendered details that distill the characters: Wilson radiates affection for Eduardo’s help in tracking down Valentine by fondly calling him Sancho (as in Panza). All of these things — along with Eduardo’s and Elaine’s motivations, and the portrayal of the relationship between the hitmen — work well. In fact, they work so well precisely because there are no specifics, but generalities sharply etched so that the viewer ‘feels,’ as well as understands, the motivations and relationships. That allows the viewer to feel what goes on inside Wilson, thus creating a stronger identification with him than would be gotten were all things laid [...]

Oscar Answers #3, 4, 5
Oscar Answer No. 3
John Huston (right), from Moulin Rouge (1952) to Prizzi’s Honor (1985), a total of 33 years.
In 1952, Huston lost the Oscar to John Ford for The Quiet Man, and in 1985 to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa. Huston, however, did win for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948).
Roman Polanski comes in second, from Tess (1980) to The Pianist (2002), 22 years; and Joseph L. Mankiewicz in third, from 5 Fingers (1952) to Sleuth (1972), 20 years.
In fourth place, with a 19-year gap between nominations, it’s a tie: Otto Preminger, from Laura in 1944 to The Cardinal in 1963; and David Lean, from Doctor Zhivago in 1965 to A Passage to [...]
