Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island grossed (or rather, is grossing) millions this weekend. The same goes for Cop Out, The Crazies, Avatar and its $700 million, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and Valentine’s Day. But forget those Hollywood flicks for a moment.
In fact, if you look at the box-office figures a different way, the top success stories of the weekend belong to two "small" movies: Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer and Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet.
After adding 41 screens, The Ghost Writer grossed a remarkable $870K, landing at #17 for the weekend according to Box Office Mojo. Its per [...]

A Prophet, Jacques Audiard’s internationally acclaimed prison drama, was the big winner at the 2010 César Awards ceremony held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard served as the ceremony’s honorary president. She was assisted by co-presenters Gad Elmaleh and Valérie Lemercier.
Starring relative newcomer Tahar Rahim as a new inmate who must fend off for himself while prison, A Prophet won a total of nine Césars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (Audiard, Thomas Bidegain, Abdel Raouf Dafri, and Nicolas Peufaillit), Best Actor (Rahim), and Best Male Newcomer (also Rahim), and Best Supporting Actor (Niels Arestrup).
Previously, A Prophet had won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, France’s Louis Delluc Prize, [...]

Kristen Stewart, following clips showing her with the likes of Jodie Foster and, inevitably, Robert Pattinson, accepted her Orange Rising Star Award at the BAFTA ceremony held this evening at London’s Royal Opera House. Stewart’s competition was European Film Award winner Tahar Rahim (the star of Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet, winner of the Best Foreign Language Film BAFTA Award), Jesse Eisenberg, Nicholas Hoult, and Best Actress winner Carey Mulligan (An Education). Tahar Rahim can be seen applauding Stewart’s win as she walks to the stage.
"First I have to thank all the fans of Twilight for proving again to be the most devoted and attentive fans ever," a very nervous Stewart said upon accepting her award. (Camera cut to Carey Mulligan [...]

Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Kristen Stewart’s Orange Rising Star Award victory would only surprise someone who has been living in some parallel universe where the Twilight Saga franchise movies haven’t played at local movie houses. Anyone could vote for the Orange Rising Star Award. I voted for Tahar Rahim, knowing full well he had no chance. But I wanted to make sure he got at least one vote. To this date I can’t quite figure out why Robert Pattinson wasn’t included in the BAFTAs Rising Star list. I mean, the guy is the embodiment of a Rising Star (see Robert Pattinson BAFTA clip). Maybe next year.
Anyhow, some weren’t all that impressed with Kristen Stewart’s win.
"Hang on. [...]

Avatar may be the king of the box office, but it surely wasn’t king of anything at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards held this evening in, where else, London.
The London Critics’ best film of 2009? Jacques Audiard’s prison drama A Prophet, the first French-made production to win the Circle’s top award in its 30-year history. Starring European Film Award winner Tahar Rahim (above), A Prophet is set in a tough French prison where a newcomer must fend off the advances of the local Corsican mafia. A Prophet has received 13 nominations for the French Academy’s Césars and is expected to win the Best Film award.
London Critics’ Chairman and Observer writer Jason Solomons called the vote "a [...]

Tahar Rahim in A Prophet (Roger Arpajou / Sony Pictures Classics)

The London Film Critics’ Circle’s 2009 nominations have been announced. The best thing about this year’s crop of nominees is their "internationality": As usual, Hollywood productions dominate the nominations, but the London critics have found plenty of room for non-American films as well.
Jacques Audiard’s French prison drama A Prophet managed to land five nominations, including best film (or "Film of the Year"), best director, and best actor (Tahar Rahim), while Michael Haneke’s German-Austrian psychological-political drama The White Ribbon received four nominations, including best picture and best director. Both were also shortlisted in the best foreign film and best screenplay categories.

Best actor European Film Award winner Tahar Rahim was present at the Dec. 12 ceremony in Bochum, Germany, to receive his trophy for his performance as a prison inmate at odds with the local Corsican mafia in Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet. However, much like last year’s best actress winner Helen Mirren (for The Queen), Kate Winslet was nowhere to be found in the auditorium.
Winslet won for Stephen Daldry’s The Reader, in which she plays a former Nazi guard who has an affair with a teenager (best actor nominee David Kross) half her age. That was in 2008. She won an Oscar and a Golden Globe back in early 2009. She was present at both ceremonies. But we’re now [...]

Penélope Cruz has already won a best actress European Film Award (for Volver in 2006) and since her role in Broken Embraces is borderline supporting, my guess is that Cannes winner Charlotte Gainsbourg (above, with Willem Dafoe) will be the one taking home the prize for her bereaved sexed-out mother in Lars von Trier’s Antichrist. But who knows? Oscar winner Kate Winslet (for The Reader) could be the dark horse who splits the vote with the brown one (Katie Jarvis for Fish Tank) so the rainbow-colored equine (French Academy’s Cesar winner Yolande Moreau in Séraphine) can win.

For the best actor award, I’d say the race is between two Cannes favorites: Tahar Rahim (above) for his [...]
