The Young Victoria, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart were the winners at the 2010 Costume Designers Guild Awards held Thursday night at a ceremony hosted by Parker Posey at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Sandy Powell won for The Young Victoria in the period film category, repeating her BAFTA feat this past weekend, and also accepted the Lacoste Career Achievement in Film Award. Powell is now the clear favorite to win the 2010 Oscar for Best Costume Design. The Young Victoria star Emily Blunt, for her part, was handed [...]

Sacha Baron Cohen in Bruno (Universal)

The Costume Designers Guild has announced its list of nominees in three categories.
Omissions are even more interesting than many of the included films. Left out were Bright Star, Broken Embraces, It’s Complicated, Inglourious Basterds, Red Cliff, The White Ribbon, and A Single Man. The last film, a period drama set in 1960s Los Angeles, was directed by Tom Ford, who is himself a fashion designer.
Considering the inclusion of Crazy Heart and Precious, no one can accuse the CDG of being enamored of glitz and glamour. But The Hurt Locker is missing in action.
The CDG’s full list of motion picture nominees:

Toni Servillo in Il Divo (MPI)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven semi-finalists in the Makeup category for the 2010 Academy Awards.
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

District 9
    Il Divo
    The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
    The Road
    Star Trek
    The Young Victoria

The biggest and best surprise was the inclusion of Il Divo among the seven. Paolo Sorrentino’s biting satire has been mostly ignored by US critics’ groups (the San Diego critics were an exception), so it’s good to see that it’s gotten some added [...]

Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian:
"Heath Ledger takes a poignant final bow in Terry Gilliam’s loopy, sweet-natured but madly self-indulgent fantasia The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, showing here at the Cannes film festival out of competition. Halfway through shooting, Ledger had made a desperately sad early exit, so the director ingeniously re-invented his character as a series of personae. Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp gamely stepped into the breach.

And when it descends into the real world – Lucy [...]

A few hours ago, Heath Ledger was found dead at his home in New York City, possibly from an overdose of sleeping pills. He was 28.
I’m not a fan of Brokeback Mountain, but the film, though only a couple of years old, has undeniably become one of cinema’s cultural landmarks. In large part, the tragic love story turned into a worldwide sensation because of Ledger’s performance as the uptight Ennis Del Mar, a gay ranch hand who lets life pass him by without ever daring to live it.
Among Ledger’s other films are Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot (2000), with Mel Gibson; Marc [...]
