Helen Mirren in The Queen (top); Forest Whitaker in The Last King of England (bottom)

Perhaps there’s something I’m missing here, but the Orange British Academy of Film and Television Arts has decided that Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King of Scotland is the outstanding British film of 2006, coming out ahead of United 93, Notes on a Scandal, Casino Royale, and Stephen Frears‘ The Queen. Yet, that very same Orange Academy has picked The Queen as the best film of the year, defeating Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, The Departed, and … The Last King of Scotland. Go figure.
There were few surprises at the 2007 Bafta ceremony held at London’s Royal Opera House this evening, unless one considers a Helen Mirren victory [...]

The winners of the 2007 London Film Critics’ Circle Awards were announced this evening at a ceremony held in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children at the Dorchester Hotel.
London Film Critics’ Awards chair Marianne Gray stated that The Queen — winner of the best British film, best British director (Stephen Frears), best British actress (Helen Mirren), and best screenplay (Peter Morgan) awards — "symbolizes everything that is right with the British film industry at the moment and it is great to see that it can compete with the best that Hollywood can offer."

Dame Judi Dench roughs up Cate Blanchett after learning that her Notes on a Scandal co-star voted for fellow Dame Helen Mirren as best actress of 2006

As The Queen, Helen Mirren has brought back to her castle just about every best actress award in the United States. Ironically, she hasn’t fared all that well in Britain. First, she lost to Kate Dickie (Red Road) at the British Independent Film Awards and now she’s lost the Evening Standard Award to Judi Dench’s lonely, conniving lesbian teacher in Notes on a Scandal.
As far as the Academy Awards are concerned, there’s no suspense in the best actress category. Barring a meteor crashing into Earth during the Oscar ceremony, Helen Mirren [...]

Following a wild — but unfulfilling (see how bored she looks?) — lifetime of food, sex, and murder, Helen Mirren settles down after being elected Queen of England.

More than 100 individuals nominated for the 2007 Oscars — including 16 of the 20 nominees in the acting categories — are expected to attend the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual nominees luncheon at noon on Monday, Feb. 5, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Among those who’ll have to mind their table manners are Leonardo DiCaprio, Peter O’Toole, Will Smith, Penélope Cruz, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Adriana Barraza, Abigail Breslin, Rinko Kikuchi, Alan Arkin, Mark Wahlberg, and Jackie Earle Haley. The 2007 SAG Award winners were announced on Sunday, Jan. 28.
Pretty much everybody that was expected to win won, from Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker to Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons. (Mirren I won for The Queen; Mirren II for the TV production Queen Elizabeth I.)
Little Miss Sunshine was the equally unsurprising best ensemble winner. Following on the heels of its Producers Guild Award victory, the low-budget feel-good comedy of the year is now considered the front-runner for the 2007 Academy Awards.
The problem with that prediction, however, is that Little Miss Sunshine failed to get a best direction [...]

Among those foreign invaders from across the Atlantic are best direction nominees Stephen Frears (for The Queen, which is also up for a best film nod) and Paul Greengrass (for United 93); best actress nominees Helen Mirren (right, for The Queen), Kate Winslet (for Little Children), and Judi Dench (for Notes on a Scandal); best original screenplay nominee Peter Morgan (for The Queen); and best adapted screenplay nominees Patrick Marber (for Notes on a Scandal) and Sacha Baron Cohen (who co-wrote Borat).
Additionally, several non-British nationals got nominated for their work in British productions, e.g., Australian Cate Blanchett (best supporting actress nominee for Notes on a Scandal); American Forest Whitaker (best actor nominee for The Last King [...]

Tom O’Neil in the Gold Derby:
"No, no, no, no — contrary to some wrongheaded sources over the past few days, Helen Mirren did not make Golden Globe history by becoming the first star to win kudos for acting on film and TV in the same year. Joan Plowright did so back in 1992, winning best supporting actress in [the] film Enchanted April and best supporting TV actress for Stalin.
"In addition to tying Rosalind Russell as the biggest winner of film awards by a woman (five), Meryl Streep tied another Globe record, too. Back in 2003, remember, she won a trophy for appearing on [...]

Everything — at least as far as the winners were concerned — went according to plan at the 2007 Golden Globe awards ceremony. That is, until the very last winner of the evening was announced: Babel.
Babel??
Set in multiple countries, in multiple time frames, and with dialogue in multiple languages, Babel (above, with Rinko Kikuchi) was a multiple Golden Globe nominee (7 nods in all, more than any other film) and a multiple loser. As the evening progressed, Babel lost to Dreamgirls (best supporting actress Jennifer Hudson and best supporting actor Eddie Murphy), The Departed (best director Martin Scorsese), The Queen (best screenplay, Peter Morgan), and even The Painted Veil (best music, Alexandre Desplat).
And then, just like one [...]

Though usually more open to non-English-language films than the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Orange British Academy of Film and Television Arts failed to place either Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver or Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth as one (or two) of this year’s best film or best director nominees.
Pan’s Labyrinth did, however, receive a total of 8 nominations, including best foreign-language film and best original screenplay (del Toro). Almodóvar had to settle for a nomination in the best foreign-language film category, plus a best actress nod for Penélope Cruz.
As to be expected, the top nominees were The Queen, with ten nods, and [...]

The Directors Guild of America has announced the five features nominated for the 2007 DGA Award.
The biggest surprise was the absence of the much-revered Clint Eastwood — for either Flags of Our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima, or both — winner of last year’s DGA Lifetime Achievement Award. (In The Envelope, Tom O’Neil states that DGA members, who weren’t able to receive screeners this year, didn’t get a chance to check out Letters from Iwo Jima, which opened late in December.)
Also missing from the DGA list were Paul Greengrass, whose United 93 has been chosen best film of [...]

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the longlists for the 2007 BAFTA Awards. The lists consist of 15 titles per category following the first round of BAFTA voting.
Casino Royale and The Queen, the two most commercially successful British films of 2006, were mentioned 14 times each.

The only major surprise was the inclusion of Emilio Estevez’s Bobby — instead of Stephen Frears‘ The Queen (right) — in the "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" category, even though no individual performance from Bobby was singled out for SAG award consideration.
Also, critics’ favorites such as United 93, and both Clint Eastwood World War II films, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, were completely ignored by SAG voters.
Helen Mirren, on the other hand, was shortlisted in two individual categories as two different Queen Elizabeths — the current one in The Queen, and the one from the early modern era [...]

The 2007 London Film Critics’ Circle nominations were announced on Dec. 14.
On the positive side, the London critics tend to be more international than their American counterparts. On the negative side, the London critics’ nominations — sub-divided into "best" and "best British" this or other — tend to get somewhat redundant.
The Queen, for instance, was nominated as both Film of the Year and Best British Film, while both Helen Mirren (above) and Judi Dench received double best actress nominations as well, for The Queen and Notes on a Scandal, respectively. (Curiously, Stephen Frears, whose The Queen is listed in no less than 7 categories, failed to receive a Best Director nomination. Frears had to content himself with a best [...]

The New York Film Critics Online went all out for The Queen, chosen as the best film of 2006, in addition to citations for best director Stephen Frears, best actress Helen Mirren, best screenplay for Peter Morgan, and best supporting actor Michael Sheen (who actually has a leading role in the film, but that’s how those things go).
Curiously, neither one of Clint Eastwood’s war epics — Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima — managed to make it to the NYOFC’s top-ten list. Also absent was Martin Scorsese’s The Departed.

U.S. film critics continue to make a few curious choices.
At the 2006 New York Film Critics Circle Awards, announced earlier today, the most interesting winner was the best foreign language film: the somber 1969 French Resistance drama L’Armée des ombres / Army of Shadows, adapted for the screen (from a novel by Joseph Kessel) and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. Both Melville (born Grumbach) and Kessel were French Jews who joined the Resistance in 1941.
Though made more than 35 years ago, L’Armée des ombres was only this year released in the United States. Yesterday, the film won a Special Mention from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. In the cast: Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, and Simone Signoret [...]

The most interesting winner at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards was best supporting actress Luminita Gheorghiu (above, with Ion Fiscuteanu), who plays a nurse assisting a sick old man in Cristi Puiu’s acclaimed Romanian comedy-drama The Death of Mr. Lazarescu.
Not only was Gheorghiu’s win a major surprise — U.S. film critics only sporadically opt for performers acting in non-English-language productions — but I could visualize Catherine O’Hara, one of this year’s top best supporting actress contenders and National Board of Review Award winner going nuts because L.A. critics chose a Romanian instead of her. (I saw the funny For Your Consideration yesterday; in that film, there’s a French Oscar nominee who inadvertently pushes O’Hara’s Oscar contender [...]

The biggest surprise found in the list of winners of the 2006 National Board of Review awards was the choice of Clint Eastwood’s View from the Other Side, the Japanese-language World War II drama Letters from Iwo Jima, as the best film of the year.
This marked only the third time that the NBR’s best film award has gone to a non-English-language production. The last time that happened was in 1949, when they picked Vittorio De Sica’s Italian-made neo-realist drama The Bicycle Thief. The year before, another Italian film took the award, Roberto Rossellini’s Paisan.
Based on Japanese Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi’s book Picture Letters from Commander in Chief (adapted for the screen by Iris Yamashita), and starring Ken Watanabe, [...]
