Oscars’ Box-Office Bump: TITANIC – SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire received a phenomenal boost during the year-end awards season, especially as a result of its eight Academy Awards nominations and subsequent eight wins. Fourteen Oscar nods and eleven wins certainly didn’t hurt James Cameron’s Titanic, either, while Rob Marshall’s musical Chicago collected nearly two-thirds of its grosses and Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby amassed more than 90 percent of its income after they were nominated for, respectively, thirteen and seven Academy Awards, according to figures found at Hollywood.com.
The Hollywood.com Oscar’s Box-Office Bump chart includes the last ten Best Picture winners, showing the amount they earned before and after the Academy Award nominations were announced. Obviously, movies [...]

AVATAR Box Office: #15 on Inflation-Adjusted Chart
Avatar has just beaten Titanic’s worldwide box-office record in inflation-adjusted US-dollar terms. As per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator, Titanic would have grossed $2.450 billion in 2010 US dollars, or about $16 million less than Avatar, a blockbuster that continues to break box-office records overseas on its 10th week.
Now, even if we choose to ignore the fact that the playing field isn’t the same — when Titanic came out, neither China nor Russia, two of Avatar’s biggest boosters, were the huge Hollywood markets they’ve become since; back in 1998, movies didn’t come out on DVD three or [...]

AVATAR #1 All-Time Domestic Box Office (But Not #1 re: Tickets Sold)

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, James Cameron’s Avatar flew past Cameron’s own Titanic to become the #1 blockbuster ever at the domestic box office — as long as you choose to ignore both inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges — with $601.6 million as per Box Office Mojo. Avatar had already overtaken Titanic at the worldwide (including North America) box office about a week ago. To date, Avatar has grossed $1.446 billion overseas; the low value of the US dollar and the relatively recent opening up of huge movie markets Russia and China have helped out Cameron’s latest hit.
Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, grossed $1.242 billion overseas and $600.8 million domestically. Avatar’s worldwide total currently stands [...]

AVATAR Box Office: TITANIC’s Domestic Record Broken

On Monday (Feb 2), Avatar earned $2.7 million at the North American box office, falling below the $900 per screen mark ($879 to be exact), according to Box Office Mojo. That represents a relatively small 14.3 percent drop from the previous Monday. After 46 days out, Avatar’s domestic total is $598.4m.
Once Tuesday figures are tallied, Avatar will have passed James Cameron’s own Titanic at the domestic box office (not accounting for inflation or higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices). The Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet romantic melodrama grossed $600.4 million in the US/Canada in 1998.
This past weekend, Avatar broke the $2 billion mark in worldwide earnings. The low value of the American dollar and higher ticket prices have [...]

AVATAR Crosses $2 Billion Mark; Tops 7th Weekend

Avatar’s estimated weekend (Jan. 29-31) gross was at the higher end of expectations: $30 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That represents a relatively small 14.1 percent drop from last week. After 45 days in release, Avatar’s domestic total is $594.4m. If weekend estimates are correct, Avatar will pass James Cameron’s own Titanic at the domestic box office (not accounting for inflation or higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices) either Tuesday or Wednesday next week. The Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet romantic melodrama grossed $600.4 million back in 1998.
Also this weekend, Avatar broke the $2 billion mark in [...]
