Marc Webb directs Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer (Chuck Zlotnick / Fox Searchlight)

Former music video director Marc Webb, whose quirky romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer became one of the sleeper hits of 2009, will be the next Spider-Man director, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have announced.
After disagreements over the screenplay, director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire abandoned the Spider-Man franchise after three films, the last of which, Spider-Man 3, was released to middling reviews in 2007. According to Sony, the new Spider-Man will be a fully revamped version of the Marvel character. For one thing, in James Vanderbilt’s screenplay Peter Parker will be about high-school age. Rumored Spider-Man replacements have included [...]

Julianne Moore (Golden Globe Awards / © HFPA)

Four-time Oscar nominee Julianne Moore was in the running for a best supporting actress Golden Globe for her performance in A Single Man, Tom Ford’s drama starring Venice Film Festival best actor winner Colin Firth. In the film, Firth plays a gay college professor in 1960s Los Angeles, where he must deal with the unexpected death of his lover (Matthew Goode). Moore plays a married friend who is attracted to the professor.
Tobey Maguire recently made entertainment headlines following his announcement that he’ll not return for Spider-Man 4. Rumored replacements have ranged from Michael Cera and Chace Crawford to Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron. Maguire was nominated for a best actor (drama) Golden Globe [...]

Robert Pattinson (above, in the upcoming Remember Me) has not been cast as Spider-Man.
All over the Internet, Pattinson’s name has been bandied about for the role, but he hasn’t become Tobey Maguire’s official replacement. Sony Pictures has made it official that there’s been no official casting as yet. There’s not even an official director, though Marc Webb and Nimrod Antal are two rumored possibilities. How true those possibilities are is anyone’s guess. In any case, Sony says they want to hire a director first. The star will come later.
Earlier in the week, after much haggling with the studio Maguire and director Sam Raimi announced they were giving up on Spider-Man 4. Sony then said that a new [...]

Robert Pattinson as Spider-Man. Why not?
For Tobey Maguire’s replacement, some have suggested Michael Cera (!), Shia LaBeouf (acceptable), George Clooney (as a teenager?), Brad Pitt (see Clooney), Channing Tatum (also too old to play teen), Megan Fox (heck, why not a Spider-Woman somewhere down the line?), Taylor Lautner (who’d be fine), Chace Crawford (fine as well), and Jay Leno (now that he’s out of a job). But Robert Pattinson would be more than fine as Peter Parker, he’d be ideal.
Pattinson means box office: both Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon became gigantic worldwide hits thanks in large part to his vampire Edward. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in which he once again stars opposite Kristen Stewart, is [...]

Best Actor – Drama
George Clooney, Up in the Air
The best actor category may be more difficult to predict at the Oscars, but for the Golden Globes George Clooney is the undisputable favorite. He’s a star, he’s good-looking, he’s charming, he’ll probably have interesting things to say when he goes onstage to get his award, he’s the year-end critics’ favorite, his movie is doing well at the box office, it has relevant things to say about modern life and the economic meltdown, etc. etc.
Jeff Bridges has a 40-year film career, lots of excellent performances, and a handful of critic’s awards. But Crazy Heart is hardly a box-office hit, and Bridges is an actor, not a movie star. The [...]

Star Tobey Maguire (above, in Spider-Man 3) and director Sam Raimi will not be back for the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have announced that the next Spider-Man film will be based on a script by James Vanderbilt centered on Peter Parker’s high-school days. The film is to be released in 2012.
Problems had been reported when Spider-Man 4 got bogged down in various script revisions, though Maguire still talked about the project as if it was really going to happen. But then Paramount announced that Thor would open on May 6, 2011, the original SM4 date. (Not that Thor hasn’t had its own share of problems, what with Stuart Townsend out of the Kenneth [...]

SCREWBALL REDUX
A brilliant young writer (Tobey Maguire) who happens to be both a pathological liar (probably not a coincidence) and obsessed with celebrity suicides. A flamboyant bisexual literary editor (Robert Downey Jr.) who can’t tell the difference between a ten-feet-tall transvestite and a woman. A pothead English professor (Michael Douglas) with so little sense of ethics that he has the gall to be upset when his wife leaves him, even though he has been having an affair with his boss’ wife.
Add to that mix a pompous successful writer, an [...]
