Oscar 2008 Predictions: Best Art Direction, Visual Effects

Best Art Direction
Atonement, Art Direction: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer
All of this year’s nominees are period pieces, but Atonement is the only one with the "classical European" look that Academy-ites most appreciate.
By the way, the last film with a contemporary setting that won the best art direction Academy Award was the 1979 musical All That Jazz.

The last film with a contemporary setting that won the best costume design Academy Award was the 1994 Australian drag-queen comedy-drama The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Oscar 2008: Cate Blanchett, Foreign-Language Films

"Who says it’s never as good as the first time! Cate Blanchett, up for leading actress for playing QE1 in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, was up for the same award for the same role in 1998’s Elizabeth. She joins an elite club that includes Al Pacino — he was nominated twice playing Michael Corleone in The Godfather and the first sequel."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that seven films have been shortlisted for the 2008 Visual Effects Oscar. They are:

On January 16, members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will watch 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven films. Following the screenings, they will vote to nominate three of those films.
