Zac Efron’s 17 AGAIN at the Top of the Box Office
Zac Efron’s latest teen comedy, 17 Again, beat the competition at the North American box office this weekend with $24 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Directed by Burr Steers, the film follows a 37-year-old man who despises his existence and gets to relive his past as a 17-year-old. Leslie Mann, Thomas Lennon and Michelle Trachtenberg co-star.
Debuting in second place with $14 million was Kevin Macdonald’s thriller State of Play, which stars Russell Crowe as a print journalist who launched his own investigation into the murder of a congressman’s assistant. Ben Affleck, Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams round out the lead cast.

FAST & FURIOUS Races to the Top of the Box Office
Fast & Furious easily outraced its competition at the North American box office this weekend with a stunning $72.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in the lead roles proved to be quite lucrative, as the fourth installment in the popular series delivered a better opening weekend than any of its three predecessors.
Also doing pretty well was DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens, which took home another $33.5 million for a domestic total of $105.7 million after only two weeks in release.
At No. 3, The Haunting in Connecticut pulled in $9.5 million, reaching a total gross of $37.2 million. [...]

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS Soars to the Top of the Box Office
Monsters vs. Aliens easily destroyed its competition at the North American box office this weekend with a whopping $58.2 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
DreamWorks Animation’s latest 3D-animated adventure follows a group of monsters assisting the U.S. government in the destruction of a ruthless alien leader. The film’s voice cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie.
Debuting at No. 2 this weekend with $23 million was Peter Cornwell’s horror thriller The Haunting in Connecticut. Starring Virginia Madsen, Kyle Gallner and Amanda Crew, the film follows a family experiencing supernatural events in their new home.

THE ASTRONAUT FARMER – Billy Bob Thornton, Virginia Madsen
The Astronaut Farmer (2007)

Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Virginia Madsen, Bruce Dern, Tim Blake Nelson, Jon Gries, Max Thieriot
Billy Bob Thornton in The Astronaut Farmer
The Astronaut Farmer is considerably more than the story of a guy who builds a rocket. In truth, writer/director Michael Polish and co-screenwriter Mark Polish have concocted a tale about devotion; one in which a man pursues his far-fetched dream at any cost, categorically refusing to let anyone interfere with his plans. As an unconventional movie built on a conventional premise, The Astronaut Farmer works just fine.
The Polish brothers, whose Twin Falls, Idaho and Northfork received warm critical praise, have crafted an inspiring family adventure tale that is subtle [...]

Sideways (2004)
Director: Alexander Payne
Screenplay: Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, from Rex Pickett’s novel
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh
DAYS OF WINE AND LOSERS
With Election, Alexander Payne demonstrated a flair for satirical comedy the likes of which would have turned Billy Wilder green with envy. With About Schmidt, Payne demonstrated that his comedic flair could go the way of Wilder’s in fluff like Sabrina — artificial, cutesy, and bland. In Sideways, Payne unfortunately opted for Schmidt’s route. I found his adaptation (with Jim Taylor) of Rex Pickett’s novel an overlong, superficial, and thoroughly unconvincing road movie about adult men — who should have been killed at birth — learning to grow up.
First of all, the film’s [...]
