"Linwood Dunn: Celebrating a Visual Effects Pioneer," will explore the work of special effects artist Linwood Dunn (above, lower photo), including the techniques he used in creating optical effects for Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane, on Friday, October 9, at 8 p.m. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ appropriately named Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. A newly struck print of Citizen Kane from the Academy Film Archive will be screened. This event is sold out, but standby tickets may become available.

"When Worlds Collide: The Science of Movies" is the title of the Academy’s Science and Technology Council’s program about the physics behind some of Hollywood’s best-known action and science-fiction scenes. George Stevens‘ rousingly politically incorrect — and for the most part much admired — action-adventure tale Gunga Din will have a special screening on Friday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Prior to the film, Oscar winners Ben Burtt and Craig Barron will discuss the sound and visual effects used in this 1939 classic starring Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Victor McLaglen.
Gunga Din will also will be presented in New York City on Monday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy Theater.

THE ABYSS Screening
The Abyss, the costly, special-effect-laden, deep-sea adventure drama about underwater aliens and a bickering married couple, will be screened at a special 20th anniversary event by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.
This Academy screening will premiere a newly struck 35mm print from the Academy Film Archive. Considering that The Abyss boasts awesome underwater cinematography and first-rate visual and sound effects, this is a great chance to catch it on the big screen.

Liam Neeson to Star in CLASH OF THE TITANS
Liam Neeson, 56, whose wife Natasha Richardson died last March 18, is set to begin work on a remake of Clash of the Titans.
Neeson will play Zeus, the ancient Greeks’ top god (Zeus is akin to the Latin Deus, God), a role played by Laurence Olivier in the 1981 film.
Louis Leterrier, of The Incredible Hulk, is set to direct the new version, which is scheduled to begin production in the United Kingdom later this month.
Also in the new Clash of the Titans are Ralph Fiennes playing Hades, ruler of the underworld, Luke Treadaway (of Brothers of the Head), Mads Mikkelsen, Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Alexa Davalos. This will mark Neeson’s and Fiennes’ first film reunion [...]

Oscar 2008: David A. Grafton to Receive Gordon E. Sawyer Award
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award to David A. Grafton.
According to the Academy’s press release, Grafton is "a pioneering designer of lenses for optical effects printers, which at the time of their development were adopted by nearly every visual effects facility in the motion picture industry."
For more than three decades, the English-born Grafton designed electro-optical systems for IBM, NCR, EG&G, and Xerox. In the 1970s, he also worked with special effects companies such as Industrial Light & Magic and Boss Film Studios, thus contributing to the production of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, and numerous other motion pictures.
