Since the 1960s, nearly every year has had at least one Oscar comeback in the acting/directing categories. Some were veterans getting their first chance at the Oscars; others were Oscar veterans getting their first nod in years.
Below are a few examples in the last 10 years. As per this list, Oscar’s comeback veterans hardly ever win.

Oscar 2006: Nominations
The Academy Award nominations are in.
Brokeback Mountain (above, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) led the pack with 8 nods. Crash, Good Night and Good Luck., and Memoirs of a Geisha tied with six nominations each, while Munich and Capote received five nominations apiece. Of the aforementioned six films, the one left out of the best picture race was Memoirs of a Geisha.
Even though he’s not a film, George Clooney also received multiple nominations, three in all: best director and best original screenplay (with Grant Heslov) for Good Night and Good Luck., and a best supporting actor nod for Syriana. Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain (top); Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche in Hidden (bottom). Noticeably absent from the L.A. Critics’ list of winners and runner-ups were King Kong, Munich, Match Point, Batman Begins, Paradise Now, The New World, and Memoirs of a Geisha. “We really did end up not going with anything big,” said Henry Sheehan, president of the L.A. Film Critics Association. “There was some support for King Kong for cinematography and production design, but there was almost nothing for Munich, maybe a couple of acting votes, but very scattered.”
