The Young Victoria, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart were the winners at the 2010 Costume Designers Guild Awards held Thursday night at a ceremony hosted by Parker Posey at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Sandy Powell won for The Young Victoria in the period film category, repeating her BAFTA feat this past weekend, and also accepted the Lacoste Career Achievement in Film Award. Powell is now the clear favorite to win the 2010 Oscar for Best Costume Design. The Young Victoria star Emily Blunt, for her part, was handed [...]

Oscar 2010 Predictions: The Winners
The 2010 Academy Award nominations will be announced in a few hours. So we’re wrapping up our list of predictions in every category we can think of, from best cinematography to best animated short.
Most of the choices below are based on which movies have received nominations from the various guilds and associations. Others — e.g., best song, the short subjects categories — are mostly just plain old guesswork. Some of those categories may end up with less than five nominees.
Also, several categories have their own [...]

AVATAR, BRUNO, STAR TREK, NINE, PRECIOUS: Costume Designers Guild Nominations
Sacha Baron Cohen in Bruno (Universal)
The Costume Designers Guild has announced its list of nominees in three categories.
Omissions are even more interesting than many of the included films. Left out were Bright Star, Broken Embraces, It’s Complicated, Inglourious Basterds, Red Cliff, The White Ribbon, and A Single Man. The last film, a period drama set in 1960s Los Angeles, was directed by Tom Ford, who is himself a fashion designer.
Considering the inclusion of Crazy Heart and Precious, no one can accuse the CDG of being enamored of glitz and glamour. But The Hurt Locker is missing in action.

Sandra Bullock – Best Actress Drama: Golden Globe Predictions
Best Actress – Drama
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Who would have thought a mere six weeks ago? I don’t believe many were expecting The Blind Side to earn even one quarter of what it has so far ($220m at the domestic box office and counting) or that Sandra Bullock would be named the top moneymaking star of 2009, the first woman on that spot since Julia Roberts back in 1999.
Critics weren’t crazy about The Blind Side, but the public is. And for the most part even critics aren’t screaming bloody murder over the fact that Bullock has been nominated for a best actress SAG Award and will be probably up for an Oscar when nominations are announced on Feb. 2. After [...]

STAR TREK, IL DIVO, THE ROAD (But Not AVATAR): Oscar 2010 Makeup Semi-Finalists
Toni Servillo in Il Divo (MPI)
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven semi-finalists in the Makeup category for the 2010 Academy Awards.
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:
District 9
Il Divo
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
The Road
Star Trek
The Young Victoria
The biggest and best surprise was the inclusion of Il Divo among the seven. Paolo Sorrentino’s biting satire has been mostly ignored by US critics’ groups (the San Diego critics were an exception), so it’s good to see that it’s gotten some added [...]
