Breaking Dawn Part 2 box office: Trailing predecessors on first day out?
Surprisingly, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 seems to be trailing the previous three Twilight sequels at the domestic box office. Starring Kristen Stewart as newborn vampire Bella Swan-Cullen, Robert Pattinson as centenarian vampire Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as the werewolf Jacob Black, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 was expected to open anywhere between $130 millionand $160 million. Barring a late Friday night surge and perhaps a pattern-breaking Saturday surge as well, if those early, rough estimates are correct the fifth and final Twilight movie will finish the weekend with approximately $135 million, near the lower end of expectations. According to early and mid-Friday box office reports, on its first day out Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is expected to gross between $60m-65 million, including $30.4 million from Thursday 10 p.m. and midnight screenings. If those early estimates are on target, that's well below the current 2D single-day record holder (not adjusted for inflation), The Dark Knight Rises, which collected $75.75 million last July. That would also be less than the (unadjusted) opening-day grosses of Breaking Dawn - Part 1, $71.64m; Eclipse, $68.53 million (a Wednesday in early summer); and New Moon, $72.7 million.
Despite its additional 10 p.m. screenings, Breaking Dawn - Part 2's midnight grosses fell short of The Dark Knight Rises' box office record ($30.6m) for a 2D movie. And if inflation is taken into account, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 also landed behind its immediate Twilight predecessor, Breaking Dawn Part 1 (approx. $30.7m).
Breaking Dawn Part 2: International blockbuster
So, though still a huge grosser, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 seems to be performing more modestly than the previous Twilight sequels in North America. Internationally, however, the conclusion to the Twilight Saga is performing above expectations. In 61 markets, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 could reach $140 million or more by Sunday evening, for an astounding worldwide total of $275 million after one weekend (plus one or two more days in some territories).
As of Thursday, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 had already brought in an estimated $38.8 million in 37 markets, reportedly breaking the single-day, non-holiday box office record (not adjusted for inflation) in Russia ($4.4m) and setting the opening-day Twilight record in Brazil ($5.4m).
Breaking Dawn Part 2 cast
Directed by Bill Condon, besides Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 features an extensive supporting cast – some Twi-veterans, some newcomers – that includes Mackenzie Foy, Peter Facinelli, Kellan Lutz, Rami Malek, Booboo Stewart, Alex Meraz, Angela Sarafyan, JD Pardo, Lisa Howard, Andrea Powell, and Valorie Curry.
