Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Breaking Dawn Part 2 to become Brazil's top-selling movie in 2012?
Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is a major blockbuster worldwide, having grossed more than $600 million in less than two weeks. Now, relatively speaking, among the world's top film markets no country has embraced the Twilight movie franchise's final installment as ardently as Brazil. Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has already shattered Brazilian single-day and opening-weekend box office records – in ticket sales. In other words, inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges don't play a role here. In US dollars, Brazil – with $33.61 million – is currently Breaking Dawn - Part 2's third biggest international market, trailing only the United Kingdom ($43.25m) and Russia / CIS ($36.27m).
By the end of its opening weekend, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 was already the seventh highest-grossing 2012 release at the Brazilian box office. One week later, it was no. 3 on the box office chart, having surpassed, among others, Marc Webb / Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man ($30.36m) and Christopher Nolan / Christian Bale's The Dark Knight Rises ($27.09m).
Breaking Dawn Part 2 trailing Ice Age: Continental Drift and The Avengers
With 6.3 million tickets sold up to last Sunday, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 shouldn't have too much trouble surpassing the animated 3D movie Ice Age: Continental Drift (8.7 million), while also leaving it behind in dollar figures ($46.5m). And even though Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner will not be able to dethrone Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans' The Avengers in terms of box office grosses ($63.9 million), they might – stress might – be able to surpass the 3D-enhanced Marvel heroes in number of tickets sold (10.9m). That's certainly not impossible, and in case it happens, that'll mark another Breaking Dawn - Part 2 record at the Brazilian box office (this one for the year 2012).
Distributor Paris Filmes was at first expecting Breaking Dawn Part 2 to sell 10 million tickets, or around 3 million more than Breaking Dawn Part 1. It's unclear whether or not that figure has been revised. Brazil's current historic record holder in number of tickets sold remains James Cameron's Titanic. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and veteran Gloria Stuart, Cameron's melodrama / disaster movie mélange sold 17 million tickets back in 1998. Needless to say, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has no chance of breaking that particular record.
For the record (no pun intended): Brazil's biggest homemade box office success of 2012 is Até que a Sorte nos Separe (Until Luck Do Us Part), also distributed by Paris Filmes. Directed by Roberto Santucci, and starring Leandro Hassum and Danielle Winits, the critically lambasted lowbrow comedy has taken in $16.21 million.
Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson on the Brazilian box office chart
Here's an update on Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson movies at the Brazilian box office: Besides Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Kristen Stewart has another entry among Brazil's top twenty movies (in US dollars); that's Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman, co-starring Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Sam Claflin, at no. 18 (down two slots since last week), with $12.26 million. And at no. 71 (also down two slots) with $1.6 million is Walter Salles' On the Road, in which Stewart is featured opposite Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.
Starring Robert Pattinson, the David Cronenberg-directed Cosmopolis is found at no. 145 on the chart, with $259,750. Another Pattinson star vehicle, Bel Ami, is no. 176, with $108,443. Now, it's interesting that Bel Ami earned nearly as much in Brazil as it did in North America ($120,462), though, admittedly, the Nick Ormerod and Declan Donnellan-directed period drama also featuring Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci, and Kristin Scott Thomas was available on VOD before it reached US screens.
