Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Trailing Only THE AVENGERS in Brazil

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson finally find everlasting happiness at the end of the Bill Condon-directed Breaking Dawn - Part 2, the fifth and final installment of the Twilight movie franchise. Box-office expectations were huge for the grand finale, which some consider the best movie in the series. Yet, though undeniably impressive, figures at the North American box office have been somewhat disappointing: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 will face an uphill climb on its way to $300m; in fact Condon's film, which is expected to boast a $276 million cume by Sunday evening, may end its run closer to $290-$295 million, thus trailing both Chris Weitz's New Moon and David Slade's Eclipse in ticket sales. On the other hand, the Twilight movie franchise has been performing remarkably well internationally, having already surpassed all other Twilight movies even after factoring in inflation. Admittedly, it's unclear which Twilight movie actually sold more tickets due to the unavailability of specific data in regard to ticket sales and/or currency fluctuations in relation to the U.S. dollar. (Note: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson star in all five Twilight movies; Taylor Lautner became one of the leads only in the sequels.)

Anyhow, as I've mentioned in a couple of previous posts, relatively speaking Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has found its warmest welcome in Brazil, where the final Kristen Stewart / Robert Pattinson pairing broke single-day and opening-weekend box office records – in ticket sales, the true measure of a movie's popularity. With $44.59 million (as of last Sunday, Dec. 9), Brazil is Breaking Dawn - Part 2's second largest international market (in US dollars), trailing only the United Kingdom with $53.56 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Next in line are Russia / CIS with $42.18 million, France with $34.97 million, and Germany with $31.2 million.

Final Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Twilight pairing breaks records in Brazil

By far the most widely seen Twilight movie in Brazil, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has sold 8.7 million tickets as of last Sunday, i.e., after about four weekends. Kristen Stewart's Bella and Robert Pattinson's Edward – plus Taylor Lautner's Jacob – have by now also surpassed (in ticket sales) that country's second most successful 2012 release, the animated 3D movie Ice Age: Continental Drift, which sold 8.7 million tickets during its entire run. Note: In U.S. dollars, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 surpassed Ice Age: Continental Drift last weekend: $44.59 million vs. $44.5 million. Also worth noting is that Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has remained at the top of the Brazilian box office for four consecutive weekends. That's longer than any other 2012 release, except for Joss Whedon's The Avengers, which also fourpeated.

Now, can Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner surpass The Avengers' Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston et al.? In terms of box office grosses, that seems unlikely as The Avengers cumed at $63.9 million, partly thanks to 3D surcharges. In number of tickets sales, however, The Avengers' 10.9 million figure theoretically remains within reach. But much like Breaking Dawn - Part 2's chances of passing the $300 million milestone in North America, it'll be an uphill climb for the final Twilight movie to surpass The Avengers in Brazil. Impossible? No. Highly unlikely? Yes. [See also: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson: Brazilian box office chart.]

Distributor Paris Filmes was initially expecting Breaking Dawn - Part 2 to sell 10 million tickets. It's unclear if that figure has been updated, but barring a steep drop in number of theaters this weekend and/or in the near future, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 shouldn't have too much trouble reaching that milestone in the next couple of months.
