Oprah Winfrey, a 1985 Best Supporting Actress nominee for Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, was the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Dick Smith's make-up job transformed the young Linda Blair into the demon-possessed girl in William Friedkin's The Exorcist. Among Blair's other screen credits are Airport 1975, Roller Boogie, Hell Night, Chained Heat, Exorcist II: The Heretic, Red Heat, and Moving Target.
