Best Film 'Avatar': New York Film Critics Online winners

The New York Film Critics Online has announced their list of 2009 award winners. Curiously, their Best Picture selection was James Cameron's global blockbuster Avatar, while Kathryn Bigelow was the Best Director of the year for the relatively little-seen Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker.

The Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to, respectively, Jeff Bridges for playing a country singer in Crazy Heart and Meryl Streep for portraying chef Julia Child in Julie & Julia.

But most shocking of all was the critics' choice of Mo'Nique as Best Supporting Actress for Lee Daniels' Precious and Christoph Waltz as Best Supporting Actor for Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. No, scratch that.

Also, Michael Haneke's stark black-and-white drama The White Ribbon was the Best Foreign Language Film.
