Robert Pattinson BREAKING DAWN PART 2: Passes $200m Milestone

Starring Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, Breaking Dawn Part 2 passed the $200 million milestone at the North American box office on Friday, Nov. 23 – after eight days (plus Thursday late evening and last week's Friday midnight screenings). As per figures found at Box Office Mojo, the Bill Condon-directed Breaking Dawn Part 2, the fifth and final installment in the Twilight movie franchise, grossed an estimated $17.4 million on Friday, cuming at $201.18 million. Is the Breaking Dawn Part 2 performance impressive? Of course it is, but it was also expected. For comparison's sake (minus the late Thursday evening showtimes for any of the previous Twilight movies): last November, Condon's Breaking Dawn Part 1 passed the $200 million milestone on Saturday, Day 9 ($212.2 million). David Slade's Eclipse, which opened on a Wednesday in early summer 2010, passed $200 million on a Thursday, Day 9 ($203.66m). In November 2009, Chris Weitz's New Moon passed that mark on Friday, Day 8 ($205.78m). And in November of the previous year, Catherine Hardwicke's Twilight, starring only Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (Taylor Lautner has a supporting role), never quite reached that mark, cuming at $191.46 million (none of the aforementioned figures has been adjusted for inflation).

Breaking Dawn Part 2 is expected to gross approximately $65-67 million over the five-day Thanksgiving period. On the weekend proper, the final Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Twilight entry should collect about $41-43 million, or down approximately 70 percent from its first weekend. Once again, such a steep drop was to be expected, as it matches the typical Twilight box office pattern in the U.S. and Canada.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 to lead most bountiful Thanksgiving weekend box office ever?

Breaking Dawn Part 2 has already broken several box office records outside the U.S. and Canada; now it may help to break a domestic box office record of sorts as well: best Thanksgiving weekend ever (ignoring inflation).

The Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner combo leads a strong pack that includes Sam Mendes / Daniel Craig's Skyfall (which also passed the $200 million milestone on Friday), Steven Spielberg / Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln, Ang Lee's Life of Pi, and Disney's animated Wreck-It Ralph. Even Rise of the Guardians and Chris Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's Red Dawn, despite their underwhelming debuts, will also help to boost figures and thus beat 2009's $258.9 million record. Confirmation will come when official studio figures are released on Monday, though Sunday estimates should give us a good idea of where things stand.
