'The East' movie: Thriller marred by unbridled earnestness The East is a didactic polemic couched in a mediocre thriller that takes itself far too seriously to be taken seriously. That isn't to say the concerns of The East's young filmmakers – director / co-screenwriter Zal Batmanglij and leading lady / co-screenwriter Brit Marling (also a producer along with, among others, Tony Scott and Ridley Scott) – aren't earnest. To the best that can be discerned, Batmanglij and Marling seem to genuinely care about our society and its ever-diminishing corporate values. 'Battleship' Trailer = 'Transformers 4' + Brooklyn Decker Burrito - Michael Bay

Peter Berg's Battleship Nothing is as cool and hip and glorious as war, if trailers for The Avengers, John Carter, and Battleship (please scroll down) are to be perceived as reflections of reality – or at least of our cultural landscape. In The Avengers, Tom Hiddleston's Loki is the enemy (well, at least one of them); in John Carter, the enemies are mean, ugly sons-of-bitches Martians (I think); in the board-game-inspired Battleship, the enemies are robot-aliens suspiciously similar to the metallic creatures found in the Transformers movies.
