Walter Salles' On the Road isn't the only road movie to be showcased at Los Angeles' AFI FEST on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On will be screened at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday (at the Chinese 4), in addition to a second screening at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 (at the Chinese 3). Though lightweight in terms of both drama and character, The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On does have more to offer than its catchy title. Directed, written, and co-produced by performance artist Drew Denny, this semi-autobiographical road movie based on Denny's own performance artwork tells the story of a young woman's attempt to come to terms with the death of her father while traveling from Los Angeles to Austin, accompanied by a childhood friend (Sarah Hagan) – for whom she seems to have (more-or-less) platonic feelings – and the friend's cute dog (Chloe).

The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On boasts first-rate cinematography (Will Basanta shot the film on Super 16 and digital, according to AFI FEST notes) that makes excellent use of the sights and colors of the American Southwest, and of the faces of the two leading ladies. More importantly, the film is enhanced by a warm, charming, at times courageously vulnerable central performance by Drew Denny as (a cinematic version of) her real-life self.
