Wayne's World movie: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Penelope Spheeris to attend Academy screening

Wayne's World, starring Saturday Night Live alumni Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Attending the Wayne's World screening will be director Penelope Spheeris, writer-actor Mike Myers, actor Dana Carvey, producer Lorne Michaels, and executive producer (and current Academy President) Hawk Koch. Spheeris, Myers, Carvey, and Michaels will take part in a panel discussion about the making of the film; Koch will introduce the evening. (Image: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey Wayne's World. Mike Myers, later of Shrek and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me fame, launched his movie-star career alongside fellow Saturday Night Live comedian Dana Carvey in Wayne's World. Penelope Spheeris' 1992 movie was a feature-length version of Myers and Carvey's television sketch about two infantile, tacky-looking, metal-head teenagers, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, who host the public access cable TV show “Wayne's World” from a basement in Aurora, Illinois.

Wayne's World: Comedy blockbuster

Wayne's World was a major domestic box office hit, grossing an outstanding $121.69 million in North America (about $236 million today), in addition to a solid $61.4 million internationally (about $98 million today) for a grand worldwide total of $183.09 million. For comparison's sake: Seth MacFarlane / Mark Wahlberg's Ted took in $218.81 million domestically and $329.59 million internationally. (When it comes to box office grosses of Hollywood movies, things have changed dramatically in the last two decades.)

As a result of its popular success, Wayne's World is guilty of introducing a number of inane expressions to American pop culture, e.g., Schwing!, NOT!, We're not worthy!. More interesting was the film's influence on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: Thanks to Wayne's World's soundtrack, Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody” soared to the no. 2 slot more than 15 years after its original release.
